Hurray!! The New Year is here and we made it! Happy New Year to all!!
We slipped down to Salem and celebrated Christmas with our family. It was great to see everyone in person and I believe that it was one of the best Christmases I have had in awhile. It really made us appreciate being together.
Jason fixed his fabulous prime rib dinner and I brought a chocolate cream pie and a Tres Leches cake, which went over great. I have never eaten so much food in my life! We opened gifts and handed out "scratch-it" cards. Jadyn was the winner this year, she won $10.00! We spent the night and returned home early afternoon on the 26th. I got a new Hori Hori knife for gardening, a new nightgown, a plant that says "I wet my plants" on the flowerpot and this beautiful pillow with all of G-ma's grandgirls names on it. Dave got a new bathrobe, some shirts and this sign that says "If G-dad can't fix it we r screwed" with a border of wood screws around it. Dave made a small flagpole for Jason's boat, so they had to drive down to south Salem to try it out on the boat. Good thing they did because it was a tad bit too small and Dave had to bring it home to bring it up to size.
The crew came down on Tuesday and were here most of the week working on the apartment. They got a lot done - finished sheet rocking the outside of the apartment, painted walls and put up doors on the bedroom and bathroom. I think we have most of the major work done so now it is just finishing up. The carpet is supposed to be here sometime today, so we are still waiting on that.
We bought a couple of doors at Home Depot a few days ago. They were cheap but were just fine for what we needed. It wasn't until we got home and I began looking at the receipt that I found that they weren't all that cheap after all. They were supposed to be a little under $40 and with Dave's veteran's discount - even cheaper. They were having a problem at the checkout stand and couldn't find a price on them. Finally, someone gave the checker a number and we paid the bill and took our doors home. It was then that we found that instead of $35 a door, they charged us $80 each! We had to go back to Warrenton to get Dave's Ford serviced yesterday, so we took advantage of the trip and went to HD with our receipt and the labels off the doors. They couldn't figure it out either until they decided that the doors had been a special order for someone and instead of getting delivered, got put on the shelf in a place where they didn't belong. So, we got a healthy refund AND we got someone else's nice doors for a lot less than they should have cost because whoever put them on the shelf, picked the lowest price bin. Home Depot honored the price and we came home a few dollars richer.
We didn't have anyone working on the apartment Thursday, so took advantage of that to paint the brackets for the breakfast bar. Then we started cleaning the place a little. When the whole place is a construction area, stuff accumulates and it gets hard to get around. So we tackled the job and went until we were too tired and sore to continue. We can pick up where we left off later today.
We were surprised to get a phone call from Leslie on Wednesday saying that my old Jeep is gone. I had sold it to Paige a couple of years ago but it was beginning to get to the point where it was costing a lot to maintain, so they traded it in on a new car for her. I think it's a Hyundai Sonata. I was tempted to shed a little tear for that old Jeep. I really liked that car.
We rang in the New Year just the same as we have for the last several years. Asleep. I couldn't even get excited about getting miserable old 2020 a proper sendoff. I'm just glad it's gone and I hope 2021 brings a fresh new outlook for all of us. Happy New Year to us all!
