IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Gee, it's the middle of July already!! I have been enjoying these nice summer days.
Between our place, the city park and my garden plot in the community garden, I have been busy trying to get caught up with the weeding. It is a never-ending job. I have been putting in my hours twice a week at the park, as we are so far behind. There are only two of us plus two volunteers who don't know a weed from a flower! We have to instruct them all the time. But beggars can't be choosers and everyone is appreciated. I spent last weekend cleaning out the little plot of daisies on the end of our driveway. There was so much grass and weeds that it took me all day to do. I had a little helper appear; I spied a snake sunning himself on the stone wall. As long as he kept his distance, we were okay. I was trespassing on his turf! Then I finally got up to my plot in the community garden. What a weed patch! Those things that I had to replant are coming along nicely. I got all the weeds cleaned out and watered it, so it is looking decent again.
The church project is coming along. The crew showed up on Wednesday and finished putting the final coat on the kitchen cabinets, textured the walls and got a primer coat on them. (That's a textured wall in the upper left hand corner). The place is starting to come together. Dave and I spent a little time and too much money at Home Depot this week, buying faucets, towel racks, a garbage disposal, a toilet, etc. for the apartment. And we still have more to get! I also picked out some samples of Formica for the kitchen counter. That was before I found out that I can't use Formica or anything like it because we bought an "undermount" sink. So, we have to go with something solid, like the Corian we installed in our kitchen. Boy, it is tiresome spending money, especially money we can't afford to spend! We keep saying we're going to stop and wait until our "in-come" catches up with our "out-go", but there always seems to be something else that we absolutely have to do before we can stop. Luis had three people with him this trip. Juan is the painter and sheetrocker. A new couple from Cuba are doing general labor for Luis, even though she was trained as a doctor before coming to the US. She can't be a doctor here, but she is hoping to become a Physician's Assistant or some kind of specialty nurse in the next couple of years. Meanwhile she is working alongside her husband as a laborer.
Have you had a chance to see the comet that has been circling through our solar system and chasing the sun these past few nights? We sort of saw it one evening but we had to wait until it was very dark and even then it was kind of fuzzy. The hardest part of that was trying to stay awake long enough to see it! Lara's friend, Kevin took some nice pictures and sent one to us.
My friend Patricia, who lives in Manzanita, had her granddaughters down for a visit this week. They are ten and six years old and needed something to occupy their time, so we decided to treat them to a steamboat ride. Unfortunately, the steamboat wasn't in the mood and wouldn't start for us, so that was kind of disappointing. Maybe next time. They enjoyed sitting in the boat anyway and Dave gave them each a personalized "Honorary Captain" certificate which made them feel better. Nothing much could make Dave feel better, though. He was really upset that he couldn't get the boat running. He's been anxiously waiting for the time when he could start giving people rides again and was not happy that he couldn't get the boat running properly. Maybe I should make him an "attaboy" certificate for trying!
Well, that's the news our way. Thinking of you and hope you're having a nice summer.
