IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Lots of things have been happening down our way this week.
I got my new shelf for the utility room painted and on Monday, Ray (our friend that does carpentry) came by and installed it. I had painted it yellow to match the walls and it really turned out nice. It replaces a paper towel holder that had a tiny shelf on top of it. There's no paper towel holder on this one but I can put one in over the sink. This is a much larger shelf and now I won't have to worry about stuff falling behind the washer and dryer any more.
Monday afternoon we headed into town to watch a "double header" as both our soccer players were playing. It worked out well as Jaysa had her game in Woodburn at 4:00 (they won 8-0 and Jaysa scored a goal) and Paige had her game in Salem against Jesuit at 7:00 (they tied 0-0) so it was an easy drive between matches. That usually doesn't work out that way! We had some real hard rain on the way to the first match and at the time, we were glad that we thought to bring our rain gear. But once the games began, it hardly rained at all and we really didn't even need as much as an umbrella, much less the rest of the stuff we brought. We spent the night at Leslie and Jay's and came home the next day.
Dave has been busy rehearsing three times a week for the up-coming play "Moon over Buffalo" in November. He has what he calls "a minor role" but he still has lines he has to memorize. He's feeling more confident about that since he was able to memorize all his lines in the last play he did. Up to that time, he had done "reader's theater" where the actors get to keep their scripts in front of them, so this has been a big step. He has been having fun rehearsing because he tells me it is a very funny play. It will be fun to go see it in November.
We have had a lot of rain again this week and fall is certainly in the air. The deer were by and finished off my green beans. They were done for the year anyway, so I took them down. I finally found the secret to growing carrots this year. If you put a little lime on the soil when you plant the seeds, they seem to do better. I got a really good crop. The only thing that is left in the garden right now is squash, baby pumpkins and beets. With all the heavy rain we got, my tomatoes are all split. It has been nice to get things like carrots right out of the garden and onto the dinner table. I'm going to miss that.
We have been having fun watching all the fishing boats out in the bay in front of our place. I saw two fish get caught the other morning. Our gray squirrel Earl is back to the feeder once more. His little cheeks are just bulging from all the seeds which I am sure he is storing them up for the winter. Between the Blue Jays and Pigeons, a few brave Finches have ventured to the feeders this year. They are usually intimidated by the more aggressive birds.
Dave has been trying to fix a refrigerator he was given and he has used the experience to learn how to edit video and post it on YouTube. It is a 15-minute video and it can been seen here.
Well, that's all the excitement around here. I hope everyone is enjoying the last days of summer.
