IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Well, it is still Friday, but much later than this journal is usually posted. I wrote everything and my webmaster edited it and checked it out on the practice page and then...literally fell asleep on the job! We didn't realize that he had not posted it on the main page until our daughter Leslie mentioned it mid-day Friday. We were gone from home by then, so he wasn't able to post this until late tonight. He humbly apologizes to everyone!
You can't beat the weather we have been having this week, even down here at the coast. I was able to get out in the yard and get all the things on my list done. The garden has been put to bed; the flower beds weeded and mulched and I planted my daffodil bulbs. It is inevitable that our sunny days are numbered and I think we are in for some rain before long.
Dave went down to Des' and helped him with the bonfire. Des is nice to let us put stuff to burn on his burn pile, so Dave goes down and helps him burn when it gets too big. It burned pretty fast and the guys had to worry about catching the limbs of nearby trees on fire. But they always have the water hose ready, just in case.
We have been having mole problems lately. Our grass isn't wonderful, but the lawn sure gets ruined when one of those critters starts digging and leaving their mounds. So we called our friend, Carl who really knows how to catch them. He is one busy guy this time of year especially when the moles are active. All the farmers around here rely on him to keep the moles out of their pastures. Anyway, he set a trap and will be by today to see if he had any luck catching the mole that has been raising havoc around our place.
We were surprised this week to see some railroad guys cutting down all the blackberry bushes, Scotch Broom and other invasive bushes along the railroad tracks in front of our place. They usually spray. We couldn't believe it when they started cutting. One of the first things they got were some little trees that are always a problem for us when they become big trees. They grow right in our view and so we usually have to sneak down there and cut them ourselves. We won't have to worry about taking down those trees for another few years! It sure opened up our view and we thought that was nice of them. But they didn't do it for us - the main reason they did it was because they were having a photo op for the steam train. The day after the brush cutting, there were about 15 photographers in front of our place taking pictures of two steam trains as they chugged back and forth, blowing their whistles. They sure caused the traffic to slow down to see what all the commotion was about. We had people stopping in the middle of the highway to take pictures and traffic was at a crawl most of the afternoon while they were here.
All this steam train activity has served to light a fire under Dave to start working on the steamboat now instead of waiting until next summer. He has been working on the burner system for the boiler and has also been polishing brass and then coating it with metal lacquer. As I said last week, if we can get stuff shiny and then apply a coat of lacquer, it should all stay shiny indefinitely. So, he has been pulling all the brass and copper off the boat and has shined it all.
And in a related story...I finally corralled Dave and we went in together and got our hair cut. His was really getting long and it was also starting to curl! Anyway, the hairdresser noticed some red in his hair and we couldn't think of anything that would cause that. After thinking about it, Dave mentioned that he had been polishing the brass with Jeweler's Rouge on the buffing wheel. The dust from the polish had turned his hair red! The mystery was solved!
More sunsets! We can't get enough of the beautiful sunsets that we have been having lately.
This Saturday October 20th, our first born, Lara, is having a birthday. So the family is getting together for the celebration. There are a couple of soccer games for some of the grandgirls in the morning, but then we are planning on meeting for lunch after the games. It will just be a quick trip into town for the birthday bash and then back to the coast.
Dave is going to be in another theater performance. The play he was rehearsing was postponed for lack of enough people for a complete cast, so they decided to throw in something easy to fill the space on the calendar. They are going to do a "Radio Theater" performance of "It's a Wonderful Life" the first part of November. Because it's done like an old radio play, he has to play eight different roles. He is running out of different voices to use! He has been going to rehearsals a couple of times a week.
Well, that's the news my way, I hope you are having a wonderful fall and enjoying the warm weather.
