IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
We hope you had a happy Fourth of July. We certainly did. I think because of all the things we do and because all of the family is here, this is one of my favorite holidays of the year. As we usually do, we started out this holiday weekend with birthday celebrations. Greg and I share a July 2nd birthday and this year, we put another one under our belts. I fixed my famous chicken and dumplings and ended the birthday meal with that huge chocolate cake you can see in the picture. I received a beautiful ceramic hanging birdbath and also some garden gloves that have built in claws for loosening up the soil for my birthday and many, many birthday wishes. The birthday notes came in the mail and online by email and Facebook. Thank you to all who did so. We usually have a big barbecue after the parade, but because Leslie and her family had to leave, we moved that feast to Monday.
Leslie and her family arrived on Monday and she brought the parade decorations for the boat. The theme this year was "There is no place like home", so she made a yellow brick road out of paper which we taped to the tongue of the boat trailer, some witches legs made out of foam rubber pool noodles and ruby red shoes (that she found at Goodwill) which we tied under the boat to make it look like the witch got ran over and put up a sign "toot, toot, the wicked witch is dead". It was a lot of fun and everyone on the parade route cheered when we tooted the whistle on the boat. We had quite a crowd on the boat with 12 people including kids. When the parade was over we came back home and I fixed lunch for everyone. Jason, Leslie and Ashtin had to go back home but we stayed up for the fireworks. The kids went to the beach in Manzanita to watch the fireworks but Dave and I were invited down to Des and Donna Kahrs' to sit on their wharf in front of a roaring fire and watched the same fireworks from there.
Earlier that afternoon, we went for a ride in the new/old boat that Dave had just purchased. Since we don't have Luke's boat anymore to use for crabbing and fishing, he found a 17' boat that seats a lot more people and we will use it for that purpose. For its maiden voyage, he took us for a spin up to Nehalem where we got ice cream cones and then circled by Kahrs' house before we headed for shore. The boat really goes fast - a lot different than anything we've had before. It needed cleaning up really bad when we got it - we found a nest with dead mice in one of the bins under the seats. but after it was pressured washed and cleaned up a bit, it looked pretty good. There is still a lot of work to be done on the boat but Dave is enjoying doing that. We haven't given it a name yet. we will probably give it the same name as our other boats and call it "Numbut II". Actually, since Dave's dad started the tradition of naming his fishing boats "Numbut", this one ought to be number six or seven!
Everybody left by Wednesday, except Lara and two of her girls. Leslie had to go back to work and Greg did too. Jadyn had a dance camp to attend at Pacific University in Forest Grove. The other girls joined me one morning for my water aerobics class and they have been going to the beach every day. The weather has been perfect all week and so that makes it nice to get out doors.
