IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
It looks like our summer is slowly morphing into fall around here. We had some nice warm days but chilly nights. We have had light showers that have helped with my watering. The garden is almost wrapped up with just a few green beans and tomatoes. I had planted some new grass seed in the lawn in places where it had died from me over-fertilizing. With this weather we've been having - hot and sunny one day and rainy and cool the next - the grass is really starting to shoot up.
Speaking of watering, last Sunday I decided to set up the lawn sprinkler and while I was moving it around, I tripped over the hose stop. As I was laying on the ground accessing my fall - no blood or broken bones that I could see - I decided I had better upright myself and preserve a little dignity. No sooner that I did that when - to add insult to injury - the water from the sprinkler came back and got me! So much for dignity! I was too mad to feel sorry for myself but I sure hurt for a few days afterwards. I also have a huge black and blue mark on my leg!
As promised, the workers came early Saturday morning to start to put the gravel and the drain line into the ditch that they had dug the previous week. They were busy hauling rock a bucket at a time - running all the way - and they were done in no time. I am glad I didn't have that job! So now that it is starting to rain Dave checks it to see if the water is actually draining. It is! Now it is on to the next step which will be to level the dirt and lay plastic sheeting down over it. Then we will replace a couple of 20-foot beams before we can install a bunch of joists and actually start laying a new floor. We've barely scratched the surface on this project.
Sunday was also our granddaughter Ashtin's seventeenth birthday. It is so hard to believe she is that old already and a senior in high school this year. Time really flies. I decided to give her my necklace with a heart and pearl in the middle that Dave had given to me as a present when I was seventeen. She really adores it and makes me feel good that she likes it. She is not the "jewelry" kind of gal either but loves it for its sentimental value. I still owe her a shopping trip and lunch at Red Robin which I will try to squeeze in sometime in the next week.
We had a couple of doctor's appointments this week. I had to check out the blood work that the lab had done on me and the report is that everything is great. Dave had another occupational therapy session and then we made a trip into Portland as his Primary Care Physician wanted him to see a neurologist regarding his restless legs. This doctor gave him some patch samples to wear instead of the prescription he had been taking and so we will see how that goes. He also wants him to cut back on his coffee, which is going to be a tough call since Dave loves his coffee. While we were in town he also had a blood test to check out his iron level as the doctor says that is one of the causes for restless legs. Having restless legs is no fun and it has kept him up many a nights pacing the floor.
The fishing is going on down here with rumors of salmon being caught. We haven't seen much action in front of our house though. Lots and lots of boats, canoes and even a rubber raft in the water are trying their luck. Dave took this picture of a Blue Heron grooming himself on an old piling while waiting for his dinner to swim by.
We are having another "Stan" visit this week. Last week it was Stan and Terrie Boyd from Florida and now it's Stan and Laura Mushaw from Virginia who are coming out west to visit some folks and we are on their list. Stan is originally from here but since retiring from the Air Force, where he was stationed at the Pentagon, they have made Virginia their home. This is the couple that we visited for a whole month a couple of years back and who showed us so many of the sights in the DC area, so we want to show them some of the northern coast. One of the things we have planned is a trip to Astoria and a trolley ride. Relaxing on the deck watching the sunset with a glass of wine is another possibility.
I said last week that we were going to the first soccer game where both Ashtin & Paige were playing as teammates. It was in Eugene the same day Dave had his neurologist appointment and the more we thought about it, the more it became obvious that we were trying to squeeze in more that we could do. So we told the girls that we'd catch a game in the next couple of weeks. Sorry we missed that one. The report was that both girls played well - Paige scored two goals - and they won 4-3.
Speaking of birthdays, Dave is having another one this Saturday. So send many wishes his way for that special day.
