IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Ye Gads! It's the middle of the month already, where does the time go?
On Sunday afternoon, we were invited to attend a "going away" party for some locals who are moving to The San Juan Islands to manage a resort. The party was fun with plenty of food but when they brought out the drums and started pounding on them, it was time for us to go. We couldn't converse with anyone with the loud noise going on. Who decides on these things anyway? We really wanted to talk with some of those who were there, but the drums were so loud we couldn't hear a word! Anyway, we wished Paul and Dana our best and told them that we were sorry to see them leave and that they will be missed around here.
All day Sunday we flew our flag at half-staff in honor of Peace Officer's Memorial Day. We also went out and bought a blue light and Dave got it mounted to the front of the house. The week that includes the Police Memorial Day is also National Police Week and the blue light is burning 24/7 this week to support our police officers.
We drove into the big city on Monday, as Dave had two doctor's appointments at OHSU on Tuesday. But first, he had to have a CT scan because the oncologist wanted to check on his lingering cough he has had for awhile. The CT scan showed nothing wrong so she prescribed an inhaler. It has helped somewhat but the cough isn't completely gone. We spent the night in West Linn as Dave's two doctor appointments were back-to-back at OHSU. One has an office at the medical center at the bottom of the tram and the other is up on the hill at the top. We parked up on the hill, saw the one doctor and then rode the tram down to the other appointment.
I also had arranged to take my 11-year old granddaughter Jaysa out to celebrate her birthday. We went shopping and had dinner at Red Robin. She wears only pants and tops and wouldn't be caught dead in a dress. We went to Macy's where she scored because they were having this big sale on sportswear. She came away with three tops and two pairs of pants. After the shopping, we stopped at RR for the traditional ice cream sundae.
After the doctor's appointments, we drove back home on Tuesday afternoon as there were two more meetings that we had to attend. The first meeting was a town hall meeting to talk about the closure of our Post Office. Since it had been flooded in December, it has been closed and we have had to drive to Nehalem to pick up our mail. The Postal Service has really kept us in the dark and we have had no idea when it was going to open again. Our mayor has written to the US Postmaster, US Representatives and Senators trying to get this resolved. The building is owned by a woman who lives in California and she has been jumping through hoops to meet the Post Office's criteria for fixing the building. It is a huge mess and we are afraid that they will never open the Post Office in Wheeler. We are trying to organize a group to get some action started by writing letters, etc. to the Post Office. If enough people complain, maybe they will do something. After that meeting, there was the regular city council meeting and of course Dave had to be there for that, so it was a long day and we slept well that night!
Our Public Works guy here in Wheeler has been off work with an injury and since he is a one-man department, we are getting desperate to get some things taken care of that he usually handles. We finally figured out how to activate the timer for the sprinklers for the park That may have been just in time as the plants and lawn were starting to wilt from the heat wave that we were having. Another volunteer has been mowing the lawns in the parks for the city and Wednesday three of us got together and put compost (that's the nice word for what we were actually spreading) on all of the flower beds. It was a messy job but we got in done just in time for a light shower to arrive.
We have a new restaurant/lodging place Kendra's River Inn located on the Nehalem River just outside of Wheeler. Last night, the owner was having an open house with food and drink so we decided to check it out. The place is very nice and not too expensive. She also has lodging for those who want to spend the night. The food was good too. We will probably go back.
This Saturday we are headed up to White Salmon to visit and have lunch with Dave's cousin Pat and her husband Teunis. They are planning a trip to Holland and wanted to see our pictures and hear what we did while we were there last summer.
Then we will spend the night in West Linn on Saturday Night. Jadyn has a dance recital on Sunday that we promised to attend. We may spend another night or come back home, depending on what time the recital is over.
