IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
So what is happening this week in my life? It's been such a busy week that I have to get the calendar out just to keep track of what we did!
The first thing we did was to go to Nehalem to attend "First Friday Scones" at the Recreation District. It's always fun to get together with the other people who show up and catch up on all the community "news". Besides, the coffee and homemade scones are great!
Let's see, what then? Last Sunday we met up with Leslie's family at Paige's soccer game at Rock Creek in Beaverton. Once we got there, I exchanged Dave for Ashtin and she and I headed to her favorite store to do some late birthday shopping and lunch at Red Robin. She loves going to "Aries", which specializes in girls' sportswear. She really "scored" since she is into basketball, and everything in the basketball clothing was on sale . She came away with a t-shirt, sweatshirt, shorts and a new sports bra. I asked her if she wanted to look for anything else, but she decided that as much as she liked to shop, she was hungry, so we headed for Red Robin for hamburgers. We had a great time and I am glad we finally got together for her way-too-late birthday celebration. Her birthday was August 29th!
After our shopping spree and lunch, Ashtin and I got back to the soccer game in plenty of time to watch Paige play. Her team was playing a team from British Columbia and they weren't at their game best that day and ended up losing 2-1. Paige scored the only goal and that was on a penalty kick. Even though the team wasn't playing very well, Paige was - and it's always fun to go out and watch her games.
While we were in town a week ago, we stopped by Elmer's Flags in northeast Portland and picked up some new American flags, two for the holiday displays for the city of Wheeler and one to replace our own tattered and faded flag here at home. Our winter weather is so rainy and windy and it is really hard on flags - especially ours which is usually out 24/7 except in extreme weather. This time we decided to pay a little extra and we got a polyester flag which is supposed to be a lot stronger than the nylon ones we usually buy. Of course, we also have to remember to bring it in out of the stormy weather; it might last longer than a year. Dave had also bought some new poles for the city flags, so after he tapered the end of each pole so they'd fit in the holder, I stained them. While we were at it, we also got a "green" light for Veteran's Day which we show at night to honor veterans.
Speaking of Veteran's Day, we had the whole family down here for an early Thanksgiving dinner that Wednesday. All of the granddaughters were out of school that day and so everyone came for the turkey and trimmings. Ashtin and Paige got up early on Wednesday and helped their grandfather and some other veterans place flags (including the two we just bought) along the street in Wheeler. I'm sure it was one of those things that sounded more exciting when they planned it the night before, because they had to be downtown at 7:30 a.m. to get started. Not a popular time of day for teenagers! Especially on their day off. Anyway, since we are all going to be gone on the real Thanksgiving Day, it was fun to get a jump start and have an early celebration. We all stuffed ourselves and ended the meal with pumpkin and chocolate pie for dessert.
Leslie, Jason and the girls came in Tuesday night, because they had a couple of things they wanted to do before our dinner. Leslie is making some pillows and needed her father to help her make some natural wood buttons for them. So they pulled out some dried walnut limbs he had set aside for future projects and sawed them into buttons! He showed everyone what to do and they made buttons. Leslie then drilled holes in them and Jason and the girls helped sand them smooth. I think they're going to work well and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product!
I am writing this journal early as Thursday I am in Silverton to be with Leslie as Ashtin goes in for her surgery. I will spend time with her while as long as I am needed and so I wanted to get the journal written before I left. She was scheduled to begin at 2:30 Thursday afternoon and it was delayed. It was after 4:30 by the time they began. We just got the report that the surgery went well. The doctor was pleased with the outcome.
Oh, and just in case things weren't hectic enough, Leslie had to get up at O-dark-thirty yesterday morning (before taking Ashtin to the hospital) to take Paige to the airport in Portland. She was headed for Phoenix to play in a soccer tournament there and will be gone all week long. It's nice to see there is a dress code for the players traveling to the tournament. She dresses up pretty well!
Dave has been rehearsing all week for the performance with the Riverbend Reader's Theater. Their first show is tonight and he doesn't feel that they are quite ready yet. He told me they spent about four hours at dress rehearsal last night, so I am sure that they will do just fine.
I managed to get outside during a dry spell and get some leaves raked up in the yard. It was a waste of time and energy as another storm blew in that night and I had just as many leaves the next day! It was a good exercise - exercise in futility!
I will be in Florida at this time next week and I don't know if I will have time to post a journal entry or not. I'll probably just do what I did this week and write it early, but if I am not around, that's what I will be doing and I will fill you in on our adventure when I return. I'll try not to tell you that it's expected to be in the 80's all week while we're there!
