IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
The week has gone pretty smoothly with a few crazy days thrown in. We made our daily trips to OHSU for Dave's radiation treatments, so that has taken up most of our days. After today, just three more days left and we are done!!
Our friend and neighbor Jim King has been giving Dave a ride into town for his treatments on Tuesdays, so I get a day home. This Tuesday was a full day for Dave. He and Jim drove into town early so that Jim could show him a few sights. They went to an "oldies" car lot where there are actually hot rods for sale. It was like memory lane for Dave and he enjoyed seeing some of the cars that he remembered as he was growing up. He especially liked the red Willys pickup, because his grandfather had one when Dave was a kid. Next, Jim took him over to a meat market called "Otto's" over on Woodstock. Dave's eyes nearly popped out of his head looking at the array of sausages, pepperoni sticks and salads on display. After his treatment, they hurried back home so Dave could make it to rehearsal for a Reader's Theater performance that he's going to do. Then he had to stop at home long enough to grab a bowl of soup and rush off to a City Council meeting. Busy day! On Wednesday, after we drove in for his radiation treatment, he and I drove back to Otto's so I could enjoy the sights. There was so much to choose from and we left with Summer Sausage and Pepperoni sticks. What a place.
We were planning on spending two nights this week in town. So on Wednesday night, we drove down to Silverton to watch our oldest granddaughter play in a soccer game. It was her first game after having been taken off the injured list and so it was special to be there. She didn't start - we didn't think she would after having been injured - but she did get in the game in the middle of the first half and played well. However, early in the second half she re-injured her knee (even playing with a brace on it) and had to be carried off the field. We were hoping it was an ankle or something like that, but it was soon obvious that it was probably the ACL again. She will have to undergo surgery in November. She will miss the rest of the soccer season and all of the basketball season this year, which is a huge disappoint for her. But I guess there is not much anyone can do about it. She does have a great attitude about it, and is committed to being back at full strength next season.
After leaving Silverton, we headed for our next date. It was Thursday and we were having lunch in Hillsboro with some of my high school classmates. They meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at Elmer's Restaurant for lunch and we try to make it if we are in town. I think we've been there three or four times this year. Usually, it's pretty much the same group each time, but even after all these years, we enjoy spending time together, talking about old times and comparing aches and pains. This time, a classmate that also worked with me when we were at the Oregon State Health Department was there. I hadn't seen her in years and it was nice to get caught up with our lives. It didn't take us long to plan to meet with a couple of other gals who used to work with us for lunch sometime. I enjoy getting together with these friends from years ago, and I'm looking forward to a reunion with those I used to work with.
We also had time to stop by and see our dear "shirt-tail relatives", Kay and Terri. We try to get in to town to see them two or three times a year. They always have the coffee on and this time we had a treat of delicious corn chowder. They also loaded us up with homemade Bourbon Balls that Kay made and freshly canned "bread and butter" pickles from Terri. We can never get ahead with those two! We have wanted to see them since we got back from our trip and - wouldn't you know it - I had left the gift I had gotten Kay from Ireland at home. I will probably put it in the mail because I don't know when I can plan on visiting with her again and I want her to have the gift.
Today, it is radiation in the morning followed by a visit with the doctor and then it is homeward bound. We are expecting guests for the weekend. My granddaughter Ashtin, along with her other grandmother and aunt will be spending the time at our place as they are having a "cousin" reunion at the Nehalem Bay Park and they don't want to sleep in a tent. I can't blame them, especially when we have plenty of room and we're about ten minutes from the park.
