IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Well, this has been an interesting week.
We started out on Saturday by hitching up the trailer and hauling a load of debris over to our recycle center at Cart'm in Manzanita for disposal. They are letting people dump yard debris free of charge until the end of September, so with pitch forks, brooms and ladder, we thought we should get it hauled over there! All went well until it came time to sweep the trailer clean after everything was dumped. I had climbed into the trailer and was busy getting the leftovers swept out when I fell through the bottom of the trailer. It's old and the floorboards were rotten. Dave managed to stop my fall a little or I would have landed on my back really hard on the pavement. As it was, my foot was stuck in the framework of the trailer bottom and he had to pry it loose. It was pure luck that I didn't break anything; just a nasty bunch of bruises running down my leg. The first thing he did when we got back home was to begin tearing the floor out of the trailer. That's done and now - as soon as he gets some time - he's going to replace the floor and sides with new material.
On Sunday, we headed into Salem to watch our granddaughter Paige play in her soccer game. They won and the score was Paige three, the other team one. And that was her second game of the day. Earlier, the score of the first game was Paige three, the other team zero. So, she had six goals for the day and she was pretty happy about that. She is so much fun to watch and has turned into a very talented player. We love watching her play.
After the game, we headed over to Red Robin - which turned out to be a bad choice. Since Ashtin had her driver's license, Dave let her drive the car over and we all followed in the other cars. Ashtin had worked as a volunteer for the Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel that day and had met us at the soccer game, so we had too many cars. It was a good thing Dave and Ashtin left early to reserve us a spot, as Red Robin was very crowded and we had to wait 45 minutes just for a table. Then it was another 45 minutes after we sat down and ordered before the waitress finally served our food! We even had to ask for utensils to eat our food. We complained to the manager and he took 25% off our check. We were spending the night in Silverton with the Alexanders so we didn't have to drive home that evening.
On the other side of town, it was the Race for the Cure which my other daughter, Lara and her family always attend. Since Lara had Breast Cancer a few years ago, she and her family have been avid supporters of that event and they always enjoy participating.
Monday, Dave had two appointments in town. The first was to remove the scar tissue from his eye that was left over from the Cataract surgery a few years ago. Then it was off for his first radiation treatment for his Prostate Cancer. We were headed to a new place in Beaverton for that treatment at the OHSU Knight Cancer Center, so we put that address in the GPS. Well, the GPS got us to the medical complex, and with the "You have reached your destination" farewell, and then left us on our own to figure out just where the Cancer Center was located. It's a big place! It took us a few wrong turns but we finally found it. Dave has to make the 160-mile round trip into Beaverton for these treatments five days a week for the next five weeks! One week down, four more to go... I didn't go with him every day but did on Thursday as he was to see the doctor and have a chat with him to see how he was coming along. So far, no side effects, but this is only the first week. The doctor thinks it will be three to four weeks before his body feels the effects.
It was Dave's lucky day yesterday. As we were driving home from his appointment and headed down Hwy. 26, he got pulled over by the police. The guy was really nice (he looked like Ponch from CHiPs) and told Dave that he clocked him doing 66 in a 55. Dave just knew he was going to hand him a ticket but he just handed him back his paperwork and asked him to slow down. We don't know if it helped that when he was pulling out his driver's license he just happened to have a card on top with our son-in-law's Woodburn Police business card showing. We thanked the police officer and he told us to have a nice day. Needless to say, Dave headed home - driving 55 all the way!
When I was out washing the windows in the front of the house earlier in the week, I noticed little piles of sawdust all along the window sills. I figured it was termites, but Dave thinks it's carpenter ants. Whatever they are, we have the exterminator coming first thing Monday morning to check them out. We saw this cartoon right after making that appointment and couldn't resist sharing!
This is the last journal in September - where did our summer go?
