IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Happy New Year!!
We had a great holiday with our family and friends. The kids got together and got Dave and I a nice set of luggage for Christmas. They thought we could use it on our upcoming trip. It has about four pieces to it and they nest inside each other when not in use. The outside one is huge and I have already put my dibs in for that one!
Dave and I stayed into town so we could attend a Blazer game on Monday. We had a great time and it was fun to visit with our old friends again. On Saturday, before we drove home, we had a chance to watch our granddaughter, Paige play basketball in a tournament in Beaverton. Not only does she shine in soccer, but she is good at basketball too! Her father coaches the team and her older sister, Ashtin helps her dad as an assistant coach. Ashtin plays basketball too on the varsity team at the high school.
We brought the other three granddaughters home with us for a few days. Their Mom had to work and they needed something to do, so Grandma and Granddad said that we'd love to have them stay with us!. Of course, they brought along all their electronic devices that they got for Christmas so that kept them busy. We always enjoy having them and they can always earn some money helping around here.
While we were in town, Dave's sister, Leanna called us to report that a raccoon had gotten up on our fence to eat the bird suet and had gotten its foot stuck between the boards in the fence. She lives next door and keeps an eye on the place in addition to feeding the cats when we are away. We had her call our friend and neighbor, Des Kahrs to come down and see if he could set it free. Des has a reputation for being able to deal with racoons, so he was the logical choice. Mission accomplished - but not before the raccoon chewed up the fence trying to free itself! Leanna helped by getting the whole operaton recorded on camera. Believe me, he was one unhappy critter by the time he was finally released from the grips of the fence. He chewed up the boards bad enough they probably need to be replaced. Dave was planning on doing that anyway, but not this soon!
Sunday, we had to make a trip to Cart'm to get rid of all my recycleables. The girls came with us and they helped me get all the stuff in the right bins. It is quite a production as we have to sort the plastic by "number" and the aluminum cans from the tin cans, the colored glass from the clear glass, etc. It is a little time consuming, but it's a good project for them. After we got that all sorted out, we headed back home and on the way came across the local herd of elk. They were grazing about in an area of new construction and didn't seem too spooked to see cars stopping and taking pictures. It is a sight you don't see every day.
While the granddaughters were here, we had to keep them busy so Dave took them over to the Emporium "dollar-ish" store in Nehalem to let them pick out something to buy while I got my haircut. Such difficult decisions to be made on what to buy with their money (Granddad usually buys it for them but doesn't say anything until they bring their purchases up to the store clerk). They always enjoy going over there and Granddad enjoys taking them.
One day, we drove up to Seaside where the girls rode on the carousel and visited the Candyman store. We came home with all kinds of "sugar" from there! Luckily, by the time we got back, their Mom was there to pick them up. You know - load them up with sugar and them send them home!
New Year's Eve was spent quietly. We did go out to a wonderful meal at the Rising Star Cafe. Dave felt I had cooked all week for the granddaughters and I needed a night off. While we were getting ready to leave the house, Dave took this great picture of the moon sitting on top of this tree in the neighbor's yard. It looks like nature's Christmas tree. We didn't last to see 2015 arrive as we were both tired and Dave is coming down with a cold.
Next week we will be heading into Silverton to stay with our 15 year old granddaughter while her parents take off to go to Phoenix to watch their other daughter play soccer in the Olympic Developmental Team Regional Championship game. Jason wasn't going to go but we thought it was too important for him to stay home and miss seeing the game. Ashtin is looking forward to having her grandparents staying with her anyway. So we will be down in Silverton for most of the next week.
