IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Being that it was the Thanksgiving week and Dave had a doctor's appointment with his oncologist on Tuesday, we headed into town for the week and just stayed in there until after the holiday.
We made it up to OHSU for his appointment but first of all he had to get his blood drawn. He checked into the office where he always has gone. After about 45 minutes and still waiting for his name to be called, I went and checked and found out that they had changed things around and that we were supposed to go to another building for his blood draw and then back there for the doctor's appointment! It would have been nice if they had said something when we checked in, or I guess we would still be waiting. Anyway, his tests were all good and the doctor was pleased with his progress. Dave is still building up his strength, especially in his legs and he loses patience with himself because the recovery has been such a slow progress. But when we think back to where he was a year ago, things look pretty good!
We checked off a couple of things on our "to do" list while we were in town. One of the items was to get a piece of antique glass for the barrister's bookcase shelf that had been broken for some time. Dave didn't know where he was going to find a place that carried a matching piece of antique glass but he finally found one in Portland and they cut a piece of glass to fit the frame of the shelf so now all he has to do is install it and fix the casing.
We also had a nice visit with our "shirt-tail relatives", Kay and her daughter Terri. It is so nice to be able to drop in for a cup of coffee and have a good chat with them. While we were there, Kay presented Dave with a nice gift of a book entitled "Astoria" by Peter Stark which the cover says is about "John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's lost Pacific Empire - A Story of the Wealth, Ambition and Survival of Astoria". Dave and I both enjoy reading about the history along the coast so it will be fun reading during our long rainy days during the winter.
We made one more stop over to visit with my older sister, Judy who lives in Milwaukie. She doesn't get out much as she doesn't have a car and it is hard for her to get around with her walker. She always enjoys the company and so we visited with her for a while. She was planning to have Thanksgiving with one of her sons who lives in Beaverton.
We were up bright and early on Thanksgiving as Leslie had invited us down to her place in Silverton for breakfast and then we stayed for dinner later on. Her husband Jason had been up all night as he is a detective and there was a drive-by shooting during the night that he had to investigate. It was 5:00 a.m. before he got back home to catch a few winks of sleep before fixing a huge turkey dinner for everyone! We do appreciate him and so thankful that he is such a good cook! Leslie, Lara and I did some cooking also and had everything ready to eat by 2:00 that afternoon. It was so good and we are all still full.
It was good to see all my family again. It has been twice this month that we have all got together - a couple of weeks ago when we had our family picture taken and then for the holiday turkey dinner. The grandgirls grow up so fast and they live such busy lives that we have to grab the moments when we can! While we were at Leslie's, Dave and our fifteen year old granddaughter, Ashtin went for a drive. Ashtin has her learner's permit and wanted to show granddad how good she was getting. I think granddad came back with a few more gray hairs, but Ashtin is doing great! Her sister Paige showed up wearing this shirt. Granddad's nickname for her is Mickey, and she couldn't wait to model the shirt for him!
After pumpkin pie and the football game, Dave and I headed back home to the coast. We have a lot of things going on this weekend or we would have stayed and came home on Friday.
We are donating our old motor home to a local man who has been living in an old trailer that just finally fell apart on him. A group of people have been looking out for him and we answered an appeal for housing help for him and I think that today is the day they will come and haul it away for him. I need to get all of our stuff out of it and give it a good cleaning before the tow truck arrives. This motor home belonged to Dave's folks and after they turned it over to us, we restored it, put a new roof on it and fixed some rotted flooring. We have only used it a few times since we have retired to the coast because it is getting old and is not very reliable. But for just parking and living in it, the motor home should do fine. Besides, Dave can use the space in the boat barn to park his new car inside out of the weather.
Saturday night, we have plans to see a play at the TAPA Theater in Tillamook. It's a comedy about an actor who portrays Sherlock Holmes and then is forced to actually become Holmes to solve a murder in his home. It's called "The Game's Afoot" or "Holmes for the Holidays".
We also moved all the furniture in the living room around because we got some new chairs. But it's getting late and I'm on a deadline to get this posted, so I'll wait to tell you about that adventure next time!
