IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
How did October slip by so fast? We're already into the middle of the month and I just don't know where the time goes.
Our older daughter, Lara and granddaughters, Jadyn, Jaysa and Jordyn paid us a visit over the weekend. The girls got out of school early and so they made it a three-day weekend. Luckily, the weather held out for most of it and they were able to play on the beach for a time and then Granddad took them fishing at a nearby lake. They were so excited when Jaysa came home with a little Perch and Jordyn scored the next day with a nice Rainbow Trout. Jaysa's fish wasn't very big but you can just barely see it by her right leg. Jadyn was the only one who didn't catch anything but there will be a next time. We cooked the little Perch up for the cats to eat and they took the Rainbow Trout home to show to their daddy.
Boy did we have some thunder and lightning here this week! I can't remember when I have seen it rain so hard down here. They call this particular weather the "Pineapple Express" because it picks up moisture as it comes through Hawaii on its way across the Pacific, and we're the first land it hits. The rain was coming down so hard we couldn't even hear ourselves talk. It didn't seem to bother the fishermen any, as they kept right on fishing. I guess they were reeling the salmon in right and left and weren't going to stop because of no stinking lightning.
We took a trip up to Astoria again on Thursday. Dave is in need of a tuxedo for the Winston Churchill performance that he is going to be doing in November and December. The last time he was involved in this production, he borrowed a tux from the theater department at the Recreation District. But that one was a very poor fit - enough so that he felt he was just one wrong move away from a disastrous exhibition - and he vowed he would never wear that one again! A friend of ours has a vintage clothing store in Astoria and we tried there last month with no luck She called this week to say she had another tux but we struck out again on Thursday. Same problem as last time - the jacket and the pants still didn't match. The pants were a shade darker black than the jacket. It was hard to tell until he tried them on, and then it was obvious. Not good. So we will go to plan B which is to look around in Portland when we are in there next week. Dave didn't want to have to buy a new one as he didn't feel he would get that much use out of it but we are finding out that good used tuxes are not that common. Dave thinks maybe guys just get buried in them!
Meanwhile, I am still nursing my poor leg. I ended up going back to the doctor's office and to get an antibiotic injection which was supposed to "speed things up". It did take some of the redness out of it but it was still swollen and uncomfortable. I finally had Dave drive me back to the emergency room for the second time, as I was concerned about getting a blood clot but they assured me I didn't have one. They did give me another refill on the antibiotics that I have been taking. So far, two trips to the doctor and two trips to the ER. I wish that they had just listened to me in the first place when I told them what I needed in order to deal with this. I hope to be back on my feet again real soon.
We are planning on being in Portland for a couple of days this next week. I have a doctor's appointment, Lara has a birthday to celebrate and we are going to make a visit to the travel agency. We are trying to make some travel plans for next year to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We decided it would be nice to visit my sister and her husband in England and then travel a bit more after that. Since it has been a while since we have been to Europe and Great Britain, we didn't want to venture on our own without some ideas. The planning for this trip is still in the baby stages but we do have the beginnings of an itinerary and a wish list. In addition to visiting my sister in Exeter, Dave wants to visit his father's cousin in southern Scotland. He also wants to rent a car and drive up to Applecross, Scotland where his cousin Alison lives. Applecross is waaaay up north (2 hours west of Inverness) and looking at the map the other night, the road looked a little worrisome, especially when the map posts things like this - warning you to beware with lots of switchbacks and "not for beginning drivers". And that wasn't adding in the factor of Americans driving on the wrong side of the road! If you read what is written in the center of the map, you'll see that we're not the only ones who are concerned! Anyway, this trip is still in the very early planning stages and a lot depends on (1) our health and our stamina and (2) how the world is doing (health-wise). We will keep you posted.
