IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Well, actually it is Wednesday afternoon. Let's pretend it's Friday, as I have to write this early because Dave and I will be on our road trip to The Dalles on Thursday and Friday.
It was busy last weekend around here. The Park and Recreation Committee for the City of Wheeler had a group from the local LDS church volunteer to work with us on Saturday morning and three of us had to show them what we needed done in the park. They wanted to do something for our community so we made up a to-do list for them. Some of the items on the list included pulling weeds and pruning some flowering bushes. One of the members of the group had a power washing business and he went to town pressure washing all the benches, tables and the restrooms in the park for us with his commercial-sized machine. What a godsend as this really needed to be done!
Later on Saturday, Dave and I took a little drive up north to Astoria. It was a beautiful day and we wanted to get out. We also had a mission in mind. Dave is going to be reading in a presentation of Winston Churchill's works in November and he needed to have a tux to wear. The one he usually wears from the Recreation District is embarrassingly small on him. A friend of ours has a vintage clothing store in Astoria and she said she had a couple that might fit Dave in her shop. So we wanted to give that a try before we bought a new one. How many times do you need to wear a tux anyway? We found the clothing store and Dave tried on the tux but the pants and the jacket weren't the same shade of black and the other sets of pants were way too short! We will keep looking as we have some time before the performances.
While we were enjoying a cup of coffee at the Rusty Cup Coffee Shop, we decided to see what some steamboat friends that live in Astoria were doing. We were planning on going out to dinner on our own somewhere in Astoria that night but were invited over to Norm and Jeanette's house for dinner instead. That was fun to see them again. We got home later than we had planned and the two kitties were waiting at the door step wanting their dinner.
On Sunday, the weatherman was forecasting a big storm approaching at the start of the week, so I had Dave get the tractor out to pull out a dead Azalea bush. And yes, he IS crying over that broken tail light. I accidentally broke it off while we were getting ready to pull the bush. Hey, the tractor still works...deal with it! Anyway, I had purchased a new plant and wanted to get it in the ground while the weather was cooler. While I was at it, I fertilized the lawn and finally found the right spot to plant a Camellia bush that I had picked up some time back. Now, I think I am done planting for awhile.
Well, the rain and wind did come and boy did we get a downpour. We needed it as everything has been so thirsty around here and I needed a break from watering. The rain falling on the rooftop was music to my ears! Now Mother Nature can hit the "off" switch for a while and give us a nice weekend. Okay?
So many people in cars stop with their cameras in front of our place on Highway 101 on their way through town. I have to agree that the view is spectacular and worth taking a photo or two. Dave decided that he would start taking pictures of all of cars stopping to take a picture and so he made up this collage of all the cars. This was over the course of a week, because we don't sit around watching for cars to stop. If we had, this would have been a day's worth of cars.
I started back to my water aerobics on Monday. It feels great to be back in the water exercising after three weeks off. It is also fun to see everyone and get caught up on the latest gossip. The girls in the class had a thrill the other day - a really cute hunk wandered in while we were doing our exercises. Talk about "eye candy". It turns out that he is married with five kids, but he sure was nice to look at just the same!
The fish have been jumping and there are still many boats out in the water. Dave caught this photo of a fisherman catching a salmon in front of our place. It isn't the best picture of the fish because the guy was all alone in the boat and trying to net the fish while holding the pole and steering! You can see the salmon's head sticking out above the water.
As I mentioned at the beginning, we are leaving Thursday for a little road trip to The Dalles for a couple of days. Dave has a cousin who works at the local radio station and Rodger has asked Dave for an interview regarding his days working for the Blazers. We always have driven by The Dalles and have never stopped to see all the sites there - the dam, museum and interpretative center. It should be interesting. After we leave The Dalles we are going to wander up to Husum, Washington. This is above White Salmon where his other cousins live and visit with them for awhile before we head back home. It's always a nice drive up the Columbia Gorge this time of year and I hope the leaves have started to change.
