IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
It looks to me like fall is going to be here before we know it. Even though it's going to be close to 80 here this weekend and 90+ in the valley, I can feel the coolness in the mornings before the warm and sunny afternoons. My garden is just about through - we ate the rest of the green beans and beets this week. The beans never did have much of a chance. The deer discovered them and feasted on the leaves. I have tomatoes left as well as carrots. I won't pull the carrots until after the first frost. They always taste sweeter to me then.
It was back to school for all the granddaughters this week. They are loving school so far and are happy with their teachers. All of the girls are in school now even the youngest, Jordyn who started first grade. Paige and Jadyn are each beginning Middle School, Paige as a 7th grader and Jadyn in 6th grade. That's the difference in their two districts. We managed to come up with pictures of four of them on their first day. Ashtin is missing - I guess sophomores don't pose for first day photos! My how the time flies!
Labor Day has come and gone and so the traffic on Highway 101 that runs in front of our place has slowed down - at least a little. It is so nice to not have to wait five minutes for RV's and rubber-necking tourists to pass before I can get out on the road. Since the weather is still nice, things haven't stopped completely, but I can sure tell the difference from last week to this one. Next, it will be the snowbirds leaving for the desert and then pretty soon after that, the last of the diehard fisherman leave our little village and it will be quiet once more.
I managed to plant the Lithadora that I had gotten awhile back by the retaining wall in front - all 34 plants! It took a lot to get them all spaced correctly over the 100-foot run - it seemed like they were always just a little too close together or too far apart! That was a backbreaking job and I am glad that's over! Now I will need to water them for awhile until the rain starts. We're really looking forward to seeing them when they grow - the trailing blue flowers will drape over the wall and it ought to be beautiful.
Tom and Jerry (aka "The Killer Kats") have been at it again. This time they teamed up on a good size chipmunk. They had been patiently watching (with baited breath and twitching ears) one particular hole in the yard. It has been fun to watch them do their hunting thing. I will have to admit that they are very good at what they do as the rodent population has significantly decreased since they have been here. Not that we were inundated with rats or anything, but there aren't nearly as many critters around as there were before the arrival of the "dynamic duo".
Dave had his birthday on Wednesday and he was given a lot of birthday wishes by everyone. We celebrated by going out to dinner at a nice restaurant in Manzanita where we feasted on grilled halibut and of course his favorite dessert, Key Lime Pie! As birthdays go, this was a special one because of all the cancer stuff he had gone through for most of the year and we are so happy to have him around to celebrate another year.
We also got a new mattress this week. After 20 some years, it was time. I was starting to wake up in the mornings with back and hip aches and I don't know if I can blame it on the old mattress or just old age. It was nice to sleep on this much softer mattress though.
This weekend we are planning on driving to Salem to have a belated lunch with our family to celebrate Dave's and our oldest granddaughter, Ashtin's birthday. Then we will watch another granddaughter, Paige play soccer which is always fun. Speaking of Ashtin, we're getting reports that in the week since she got her Learner's Permit, she has been driving everywhere and doing a pretty good job of it too! The report is that her parents haven't been able to drive anywhere this past week!
