IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Girls

Flags

We had a nice Memorial Day weekend with a visit from our daughter Lara and her three girls. The weather was even halfway decent and they had a chance to get out and enjoy the beach while they were down here. Usually it's a challenge to keep the girls entertained, but their mother had a good plan about when to get them down to the seashore and for how long. In the past, we've also had a problem keeping them occupied while they are here at the house, but not so much anymore. Now, it is such fun to see them amusing themselves while they are here. The two older ones brought along their favorite books and were actually reading. That was hard to believe because last year it was like pulling teeth to get them to sit down and read. The youngest one, Jordyn busied herself with dolls and horses that Grandma has stored and that is always fun to have something different to play with. She can stay busy with them for hours.

On Saturday morning the girls got up early and helped their Granddad put up the town flags for Memorial Day. He was shorthanded that day as most of the people who usually help were not available, and he's not able to do much yet. So he was glad to get the help. The grandgirls were such good helpers that Granddad stopped by the bakery after they finished and rewarded them with chocolate donuts for helping out.

Another job that Granddad needed help with was taking the curtains off the steamboat. We put them on last fall to help keep the boat from freezing in the cold weather. With a little help from Grandma, we were able to remove them in no time. Now Granddad can get into the boat and get it ready to steam it up for the 4th of July parade.

The girls also pitched in and help me with some yard work. I was removing some of the growth between the house and church so that Rocky the raccoon wouldn't have easy hiding places when he comes to our house for his "free" meal. Dave and his BB gun are always on the lookout for him and when Rocky sees Dave he dashes for the bushes to hide until he feels it is safe to come out. We managed to get a lot of the brush cleared away so he can't hide as easily.

The rest of the week has been more of the same. I worked out in the yard, shoveled more gravel on the pathways and pulled weeds. I don't know who is winning that battle, me or the weeds!

Dave had a couple of meetings - getting the city's budget set for the next year and attending a meeting of the Port Commission with a group from Wheeler trying to get them to help fund a new park we're planning for the town. They got the budget balanced and the Port said OK to the funding request, so it was all time well spent.
