IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Dave and I took our first road trip since his recovery from cancer. We headed up to Seattle by way of Bainbridge Island to attend the Northwest Steam Society's annual meeting and luncheon on Saturday. Since it is a five-hour drive from our place at the coast, we take Highway 101 most of the way, cutting off near Montesano through the Hood Canal and Bremerton to spend the night with friends, Marge and Tom Kane. We had a nice visit with them and then the next morning the four of us took the ferry to Seattle to Lake Union where the lunch was held. There were quite a few of people at the meeting and everyone was excited to see Dave and to hear how he was doing.
After the meeting, we headed home. Dave got us through Seattle and I took over when we stopped for gas in Olympia. Then I drove until we reached the Columbia River and the wind was blowing so strong that I let Dave take over. He had to drive over the bridge which was pretty scary with the winds blowing about 50 miles an hour! But we made it and then he had to drive around Neahkahnie Mountain where we encountered more head winds before we finally made it home safe and sound. Needless to say, we were both tired and glad to get home.
We have been having beautiful weather this week. I was even able to have a work party up at the park on Wednesday. We have had to cancel the past couple of weeks because of the weather. Anyway, there were about five of us and we got some weeding done and pruned the roses. It got me so enthused that I came home afterwards and starting cleaning out the Escalonia hedge that was being over taken by weeds, mainly Bitter Crest. That little weed with the tiny white flowers can be hard to get rid of if you don't pull it up before it goes to seed. If you wait too long and go to pull it up later the seeds pop and scatter all over the place. It took me about four hours over two days to get the hedge cleaned up and boy am I sore.
Dave has started going to physical therapy and he is sore from all the exercises and walking that the therapist wants him to do. But he is being a real trouper and is diligent about doing his exercises. One of the side effects that he has encounter with his chemo treatments is Neuropathy of his feet where he doesn't have any feeling. He says it is like trying to walk with a couple of stumps for feet. When he goes back to see the doctor, he will discuss this matter. We're not sure yet when that meeting will take place.
I hope everyone enjoys St. Patrick's Day on Monday. I bought a corned beef and plan on fixing that with cabbage, carrots and potatoes. It is one of our favorite meals.
