IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
As my granddaughter would say, "Happy Veterinarian's Day!" A few years ago, her mother encouraged her to call and wish her grandfather a happy Veteran's Day, and that's how it came out! So now it has become a tradition to wish Dave a "Happy Veterinarian's Day". Anyway, I am glad we have this special day to honor all you veterans and I am truly thankful for your defense of our great nation.
You know that today is 11/11/11, don't you? In fact if you're reading this at 11:11 this morning, that would be really special! I think we ought to go out and toot a horn or something!
This is going to be short this week. There has been quite a bit going on, but it's just boring stuff like meetings and doctor's appointments, so there really isn't anything very exciting to talk about.
Now that fall is in full swing, let's get ready for the holidays. I was at the store the other day and could hardly find any decorations for Thanksgiving as the Christmas stuff has moved in. Good grief! Can't we enjoy the present holiday instead of looking so far ahead to Christmas? I don't enjoy Christmas shopping anyway with all the crowds and no parking spots available and so pushing the holiday ahead a few weeks really gets to me.
Dave wrapped up the last production of the Reader's Theater play on Robert Service on Sunday. This weekend was a far cry from last weekend where they only had a handful of people for each performance. This weekend it was a standing room only crowd all three days. The word must have gotten out how good the play was. Afterwards, we had a cast party and celebrated the accomplishment. The director of the play, Bob LaTorre gave everyone a hand-made wooden toy for their efforts. There were intricately made trains, trucks, boats and puzzles. In turn, the cast gave him and his wife tickets to a production at the Coaster Theater in Cannon Beach.
I get a kick out of surprising my husband every once in a while. Last week, he told me he wanted to get his favorite watch repaired. The strap had broken a couple of months ago and then he discovered the battery was dead too. He had spotted this watch on eBay and won the auction for it. It's his favorite because it means three things to him. First, the steamboat thing is pretty self-explanatory. Second, our youngest granddaughter is nuts about Mickey Mouse, and loves it when he wears the watch. Third, his nickname for Paige is Mickey (her middle name is Michael - in memory of her paternal grandfather). Anyway, I sneaked the watch into my purse and while I was in town earlier in the week, I stopped by the jeweler and had both problems fixed. You should have seen the look on his face when he saw the watch! He's been wearing it even since and I'm lucky to get it off of him when he goes to bed!
As I said, this week was busy going to various meetings and driving into Portland to do a couple of errands. Since I had a doctor's appointment in town on Wednesday, we decided to bundle our trip and visit with friends in Tualatin who wanted an electrical opinion (job) on additional wiring in their house. We also stopped by the Beaverton City Hall and talked with a former Wheeler city manager who now works as the Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Beaverton. Dave wanted to pick his brain about the requirements for the city manager's job in Wheeler. The city council needs to fill the position and Dave has been talking to some people who are familiar with the city's needs to get a jump-start on hiring someone.
We hit a milestone on the way to town yesterday, the Suburban hit 100 grand!. And to think that when we bought it two years ago, it was because it had LOW mileage! I guess it still does - it's nine-years-old and the average for a car of that age would be about 135K. Still, it's kind of a wake-up to see the odometer at six digits!
Since we're back on standard time, the sun sets early. We were driving home from the valley in the dark and in the course of the conversation, we decided one thing we really miss - was a headlight dimmer switch on the floorboard! When we were kids, that's where the switch was - down where you could operate it with your left foot. Now of course, it's on the steering column and in order to dim your lights (which we do a hundred times on the way home) you have to let go of the wheel and activate the switch with your hand. Then you have to let go of the wheel again to put 'em back on bright! Believe me, it was a whole lot simpler to just push the button with your foot! Okay...now that we've dated ourselves - again - we'll get back off the nostalgia trip!
Again, I'm sorry this is so short this week. Next week is a busy week and I'll try to find some interesting news to report then!
