IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Last weekend was our 46th wedding anniversary and to celebrate we went out to dinner at a nice restaurant in Cannon Beach. Dave had grilled salmon and I had a steak. It was great! Afterwards, we walked across the street because we had tickets to see the play "The Mystery of Irma Vep" at the Coaster Theater. The play was unusual because there were only two actors who played six different roles. Each actor played both men and women, so there were a lot of very quick costume changes between scenes. As usual, it was well done and we enjoyed it. We are very grateful to our kids for getting us those tickets. They got a pack of three plays for us as a gift. This was the third of those plays and we have really enjoyed them.

Sunday was our actual anniversary, but we didn't do much. In fact, I spent the day doing more painting. I am about half way done with the last part of this project - the floor of the deck. I can only paint for a couple of hours before my knees start complaining. Dave has been sanding the rough spots before I hit it with the paint so that takes a little longer too. I was hoping to get most of it done before the rains arrived on Thursday but I didn't quite make it. We ended up putting up a tarp so the unpainted wood wouldn't get soaked, and we got it up just in the nick of time. We are supposed to have showers most of the weekend which really throws me off my schedule. We've been working on this since June and once the last of the paint is on, we'll be done. I really want to get it done this weekend because we have guests arriving in the next week and I want it to look good.

I spent Thursday afternoon at the Extension Office in Tillamook working as a Master Gardener and answering questions and identifying pests. We weren't too busy, so I did some investigating on some questions of my own. I have discovered this weed in my yard that I needed to identify, but I couldn't find it this time. I'll check it out again the next time I'm working in that office. It was a quiet rainy afternoon at the office anyway, so it helped to have a project.

We were entertained by our herd of elk on the island again this week. They wandered over about the middle of the week and spent a couple of days grazing about. I am amazed that they weren't frightened off by the fishermen and kayakers who are out in the bay. Speaking of wild beasts, I caught a couple of deer "red handed" this morning trying to eat my flowers again. A deer and her fawn were having a great time until I tried to scare them away. They aren't too timid around folks these days, so I could practically walk right up to them. I must have chased them from one end of the yard to the other before they took the hint that they were unwelcome and headed for the woods.

All the grandkids are back in school now (even 3-1/2 year old Jordyn is in pre-school) and they have called to tell me about school. Ashtin is discovering Middle School, lockers, going from class to class and making the seventh grade "A" team in volleyball. Paige has moved up to another school as a fourth grader. Jadyn had to tell me about learning all about the universe and making a Moon journal for the month of September in her third grade class. Although Jaysa loves being in first grade, she keeps asking when the weekend will be here! They are all growing up too fast!

The weeks seem to fly by and fall is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? I can feel the nights getting a little cooler but we are still having warm days, and of course it's getting darker sooner. I even added an extra blanket to our bed. We are trying not to turn the furnace up yet but I did ask Dave to light the propane fireplace this week to take the chill off. We would normally be getting ready for the NBA season about now, but the latest news from the lockout doesn't look good and we may indeed lose part of the season. That's good news and bad news. We won't have to travel to the valley and so we'll be able to save on gas, but of course there's no income either. Dave has picked up a little extra work to help compensate...he'll be back in Portland to work on a football telecast tomorrow.
