IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
Busy week!
We started out with a three-day Memorial weekend by having the Dewey's down to our place. We always enjoy them, especially the granddaughters. Since we aren't going to Portland to visit them very often, I really miss seeing them. We always watch Jordyn (the three year old) while the rest of them head for the beach while Jordyn takes her nap. Jordyn doesn't seem to mind because she gets to go when it is earlier in the day and it doesn't interfere with her nap. She is so entertaining and Dave and I get such a kick out of her. You just never know what she is going to say. For instance, we were looking at the family pictures that were somewhat out of date because Jordyn wasn't born yet. Anyway, she was looking at the picture and explained to me that she was a "twinkle". Questioning her, she told me that Mama said the reason she isn't in the picture is because she was still a twinkle in her daddy's eye! The two older granddaughters are sure growing up. It is hard to believe that Jadyn is eight all ready and Jaysa is six. They too enjoy coming to the beach!
The first thing we did on Saturday morning was gathered all the flags at city hall and mounted them in their holders along the street to honor Memorial Day. The weatherman had promised at least one of the days during the three-day weekend to be fairly nice, but Mother Nature seems to have other ideas and we did get a few showers between sun breaks.
After the gang left on Monday, Dave and I got ready to meet some friends in Cannon Beach. Linn and Susanne Harrison live in Seattle and have a second home in Seaside. They were down for the holiday and so we planned on dinner together half-way between Seaside and Wheeler, so we picked Cannon Beach. Both Linn and Susanne used to work with Dave and being old radio buds they had a lot of catching up to do. It was an enjoyable evening.
I managed to get a little yard work in this week. Those darn weeds can sure grow fast. I just get one section done and it is time to do it again! Since my knee has been giving me a bad time, it is hard to get down and dirty but I manage. I also have been doing a little weeding for the local motel. She's the first one to admit that neither she nor her husband know a weed from a plant so I told her I would come and clean out her flower beds. Since she is my hairdresser, I bartered to get a couple of haircuts free out of the deal. She bought some flowers and I managed to get them in the ground between showers.
I also helped Dave with the steamboat this week. He has taken out the deck plates and we are now in the process of cleaning the bilge. What an oily, greasy mess that is! After he got the decking up, he came into the house and asked if I had felt the earthquake. I so no and he responded by saying, "Well then, it probably was my mother rolling over in her grave at the sight of the bilge!" She was such a stickler about having that boat spotless, so much I believe you could have eaten off the deck floor! We are trying, Lillian and when we get done with cleaning the bilge, deck plates, boiler and painting the seats in the boat; we will make you proud once again. We hope to have everything done before the 4th of July parade.
Wednesday evening we were invited to have dinner with Dawn Kahrs and her son Taylor. She has moved out of Des and Donna's house and is in a really cute rental on their property. She has it fixed up really nice and wanted us over to check it out. Dave has been helping with the electrical in her place and another friend, Ray has been doing all the carpenter work. The place is old and there isn't a plumb or level spot in it, so it has been quite a project. Anyway, I made macaroni salad and she made a green salad and had BBQ some chicken. She has wanted Dave over to "taste" some single-malt scotch she has been saving, as she knows Dave enjoys that. Dawn's chiropractic practice is really moving along and we are really proud of all she has accomplished since she and her son moved back to Oregon from California a year ago.
There is new wildlife to report. Dave spotted a young eagle the other day sitting on a piling out on the bay. The eagle hadn't gotten his coloring yet (no white on his head or chest) but his profile was definitely that of an eagle. There is a nest of them over on the island in front of our place. I also noticed that the Cedar Wax Wings were back munching on my Red Hot Poker plant. That is the only time we see them is when the plant is in bloom and when they have had their fill of the nectar, then they are gone. All of the mama elk have had their calves and have rejoined the herd so we have babies following their mothers around in the meadow. We are at a losing battle with a raccoon that keeps showing up at the birdfeeders. Dave had showed me how to use his bb gun and I managed to scare him (Rocky, not Dave) away a few times with that. I don't think I have hit him as he keeps coming back for more. Such is the life.
I mentioned that we went to the Coaster Theater last Friday to see "Dixie Swim Club". It was every bit as good as we thought it was going to be. They do a great job with that little theater in Cannon Beach. Tonight, we'll go see "Lie, Cheat and Genuflect", a comedy put on by Dave's theater group in Nehalem. People who have already seen it say they enjoyed it too, and since Dave isn't in this performance, we get a rare chance to go sit in the audience and watch it.
