IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Jan

plant sale

It was a busy weekend with the garden club's annual plant sale on Saturday. I spent most of Friday with the setup and arranging the plant deliveries at their appointed tables and then the doors were opened the line of people waiting to get in at 9:00 on Saturday. I helped with the Master Gardener's booth by answering people's questions on identifying and the best location to plant their newly purchased item in their yard. In spite of the rain, the sales were brisk and we managed to sell a lot of plants. There were a lot of plants left over too, mostly tomato plants which we donated to the Alder Creek Farm for their sale this coming weekend. I think the estimated total of the 4-hour sale was close to $3,500. Not bad for a day's work and a lot of hard work from all the members of the club. Most of the monies we made will be distributed among the community to various charitable organizations.

I did get a couple of "Happy Mother's Day" calls from my girls so I know that they were thinking of me. I always appreciate them thinking of me...they're both so good about remembering special days. Both girls - and now the grandgirls - take time to think of us on all those days, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays - Dave even gets calls on Veteran's Day! Since we had Mother's Day one weekend and birthdays the next, we are getting together to celebrate this Sunday. Leslie's, Jaysa's and Jason's birthdays are back to back to back this week.

Mold fight

On Mother's day we headed for our favorite place to eat breakfast and then it was home to take it easy. Ha! I was lying on the bed looking up at the window and discovered the mold that had been collecting all winter long in the window tracks! The windows are single-paned and therefore when it is really cold outside and warm inside they tend to "sweat" a lot and thus we get mold. Dave and I spent a couple of hours cleaning out the tracks with bleach water and toothbrushes and then later, I decided to paint the window sills. So you might say I started my "spring cleaning" with the bedroom. I did notice the air felt cleaner that night as I dozed off to sleep but it probably was just my imagination.

Wednesday is a workday for the park and rec. and so in spite of the rain, I worked out in the park pulling weeds for about an hour before I was soaked to the skin. Not something I should be doing with my cold, but I came home and took a hot shower and watched it rain the rest of the afternoon. Is this ever going to stop? I sure would like to plant some of the flowers I have purchased that are still in my greenhouse.

I am still fighting my cold and decided I have had enough so made an appointment with the doctor on Thursday. I have had this sore throat for over two weeks and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. The doctor said I have a sinus infection and gave me an antibiotic. I sure hope I improve as I am getting sick and tired of being sick.

I put in an afternoon at the Extension Office on Thursday investigating plant mysteries. We weren't very busy as this wet spring has slowed a lot of gardeners down and once the weather does get better, the questions should pick up.

Dave kept busy over the week too. He got his big trailer and helped set up for the plant sale over the weekend. While he was doing that, he discovered part of the platform was rotted, so he spent part of the week making repairs in time to use it again this next weekend. Monday, he drove to Portland to attend a luncheon put on by the Blazer radio broadcaster. It was just in - eat - and return that afternoon. Tuesday the City Council met in a special session to swear in the new mayor, and then the Budget Committee spent the rest of the night going through the numbers for next year's city budget.

Saturday is Wheeler's clean-up day and so we will help out with that by collecting/sorting debris from the community. That's what he needed to fix the trailer for. This will be our third year for this event and it has really helped beautify the little town as it is an opportunity for people to throw away a lot of junk free of charge. After that, we are heading into town as I have a date with my 6-year old granddaughter to go shopping and out to eat at Red Robin for her birthday. An event that we both look forward to doing each year!
