IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!
We headed into town last Thursday as Dave had a Blazer broadcast and then another game on Saturday. Since we had Friday free, I went over to visit my sister and we went out shopping for some things she needed. It's hard for her to get around and it helps if I go along. Once I got back, it was pretty much the usual - the girls come down and play and we try to get them to stop and read to us. I did help Jadyn write a poem on the computer. She really does enjoy anything she can so on the computer, and it's easy to get her to be creative on that. All in all, it was fun being with the granddaughters once again. I really need to do that every once in a while, just so I can get my grandma fix! I do miss not being able to see the other two very often. I'm hoping we will be able to spend some time with them next week when we're going to be in town for more than just a couple of days. I just found out that Lara's girls got their hair cut on Thursday and it was Jordyn's first one! She has such beautiful curly hair and I hope their mother saved a lock of it.
We got up Sunday morning and after breakfast, headed back to Wheeler for the week. We will be home all week with meetings and appointments to keep us out of trouble.
I started my physical therapy on my knee this week. The therapist did an ultrasound treatment and then massaged the heck out of it. Then she put some electrodes on my knee, cranked up the voltage and then put a cold, damp cloth on top of that for about 15 minutes! It is what I would call torture, but it has made it feel better. I went in for a second treatment on Thursday and it hurt worse than the first time! When I left after that treatment, she gave me some exercises to do. I have to go to four more sessions and believe me I am counting the days until they are all over. I have also started taking deep-water aerobics to help keep my knee from any impact in the water. Our instructor is a real taskmaster and I really get a work out. There is no fear of drowning (which I felt like I was at times) because you wear this floating belt around the waist and the only thing that could happen is that you could float upside down! I was pretty sore after my first class of exercises. So now - when I'm in town - I'm doing the regular water aerobics four mornings a week and now the deep water exercise two nights a week. That's either going to get me in shape or I'll die trying!
I am on the emergency committee here in Wheeler and we had a training exercise with our new FRS radios on Thursday. Since everyone didn't know how to use the radios, we went to the coordinator's home and had a lesson first and then were sent home to do our simulated drill. We had a script to follow that had various emergency scenarios on it. Since I am the zone commander for our end of town, all of the captains of the various neighborhoods had to call in to me with their problems and then I would relay them to the base commander. It was hard, especially since I had to have two radios on different frequencies going at the same time (one for the call-ins and one to communicate with the base commander) and I couldn't get a very good reception unless I went out on the deck to talk. By the end of the training I didn't know my name let alone what zone I was in because of all the emergencies that were going on. Besides, it was a cold, wet day and I about froze outside! It was really a good eye-opener and training as we learned a lot from our mistakes. Let us hope that the real thing never happens!
I didn't have a place to put this picture of Jordyn in up above, but I really think it's cute, so I'm going to stick it in here.
Dave has been keeping busy too. He went to town for a Blazer broadcast Tuesday and spent the night at Lara's. On his way home on Wednesday, he went to visit he friend Dan who lost his wife in September. He spent an hour or so talking with him and then headed home in the afternoon. Thursday morning, he and two other guys put up all the Veteran's Day flags on the downtown streets. After that, he started installing the trim boards on the floors, doors and windows at City Hall. They have completely painted the main office, and will get new carpeting this next week, so they had to take advantage of the office being closed for the holiday and get as much of the woodwork done as possible on Thursday. I can't wait to see it when it's done. After the woodworking, he joined the same emergency exercise that I was in. He was the ham radio operator that relayed our messages to the Emergency Operations Center in Manzanita. When he finally finished that, they had to go take the flags down and lay them out to dry. So, it was after seven when he got home and we finally sat down to eat. It was a very busy day for both of us!
We will be staying in Wheeler for the weekend, as Dave will be part of a group doing a "reading" of Winston Churchill speeches at the Hoffman Center in Manzanita on Sunday night. He has been rehearsing for a couple of weeks.
