IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!
We have been gone from home most of the week and when we were home it seems like we were gone because we had so many meetings to attend.
Like I said, we have been gone. Last weekend we went into Portland as Dave had a few Blazer broadcasts and while we were in town, we went down on Saturday to watch our oldest granddaughter, Ashtin play basketball. We try to make it to at least one of the games. She is playing really well and it was fun watching her. She also is now the caretaker of two little pigs for her 4-H project. They looked so scared in the cage and I can just imagine what was going through their little minds! Anyway, Ashtin plans on raising the two little ones and then sell them at the fair this summer. I think that would be very hard to do and I will see how it all works out when it is time to take them to market. They are also getting some chickens but I don't think they have arrived so I am beginning to save my egg cartons in hopes of getting some fresh eggs now and then.
While Dave was setting up for the Blazers on Sunday afternoon, I got on the MAX train and went out to the Expo Center to see the Home and Garden Show. I must have walked 10 miles looking at all the exhibits! I couldn't resist some of the plants that they had for sale and managed to bring a few of them home. After I was completely exhausted, I rode the MAX back to the Rose Garden where we had parked the car and deposited my plants before I went in to watch the game. I got there just after it started and spent the first half watching from the studio in the back and the second half up where Dave sits. After the game, we headed for home, it was raining and foggy and the glare of the on-coming traffic made for a terrible drive but we arrived safely.
Monday was busy with water aerobics, reading classes and an emergency preparedness meeting and then Tuesday, Dave had a city council meeting and workshop and I had a garden club meeting. In between all that, I was trying to pack and get ready for our trip to Ashland. We left right after the garden club meeting.
We spent the night in Roseburg - that is a little over half way - and then Wednesday morning we made it into Ashland for our first play that started at 1:30. The first play we saw was the "The Music Man" and then later that evening we saw "Macbeth". Both were very well done. We finished the following day by seeing a play called "Death and the King's Horseman" which was a play based on actual facts about a culture clash between British colonial officials and an African tribal ritual. The first act was mostly natives dancing and singing but the second act was more enlightening. The last play we saw was "Dead Man's Cell Phone". This play was about a woman who picks up a cell phone belonging to a dead man, and the things that happen as a result. I felt like a little bit like I was in the Twilight Zone. Both of these plays were a little strange. Well done, but strange.
We woke up on Thursday to snow mixed with rain and I didn't pack properly with only my light jacket. I did manage to have an umbrella in the car. After breakfast we didn't feel like going shopping because of the weather so we spent most of the morning in our hotel room snuggled up with a good book and the computer.
I must make an observation here. I had forgotten to bring along Dave's pain medication, so we made a quick trip to the pharmacy, which is right across the street from the hotel. We had to laugh at ourselves because when we first began to come to Ashland some 30 years ago, most of our shopping was in the children's shops as we looked for things to bring back to the kids. Later, after the kids were older, we spent more time in the boutique stores, shopping for ourselves. Then suddenly, we were back in the toy stores, this time shopping for stuff for the grandkids. This time? We went to the drug store! Are we getting old or what?
On our trip home, we made our "mandatory" stop at Harry and David in Medford. Since it's right on the way home, I always love to stop there for fresh fruit and little odds and ends that I can't find anywhere else. After leaving Medford, we cut over from I-5 going west on Highway 138 that winds alongside the Umpqua River to the Oregon Coast. This is a beautiful drive and I always enjoy going this way. We drove by the elk reserve at Elkton on our way, and saw a few elk right alongside the road. We hit the coast at Reedsport and then took Highway 101 north to Wheeler. It is about a 6-hour drive and we did stop to stretch our legs in Yachats where we treated ourselves to an ice cream while we watched the waves pound on the rocks at the State Park.
We will be home just for overnight and then will head back into Portland on Saturday. We will baby sit for the granddaughters Saturday night while Lara and Greg go out. Dave has another Blazer broadcast on Sunday, but since it is an early game, we will drive back home Sunday evening.
GIVE ME A BREAK
I haven't ranted for a while but want to pose these questions. Why is it that when you are in a restaurant eating a meal, the waitress ALWAYS approaches your table and asks you how everything thing is just as you take a big bite of food and all you can do is mumble foolishly at her? It happens to me a lot - and it happens to Dave every time we eat out. He can't remember the last time he was able to say "Just fine, thanks", without spewing food! Or, when the waitress brings your food and it is so darn HOT you can't eat it. I don't know how many times I have burned the inside of my mouth on this trip! This has happened to us so many times, and I think at least four times this week. The other question has to do with hotels. Why is it - when someone has paid good money for a hotel room - they instead decide to stand out in the hall in the middle of the night right in front of your door and carry on a conversation that people on the next floor could hear? Go to your room and talk - let me get some sleep!
Thanks - I feel better now.
