IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

It's been a beautiful fall week and we are enjoying the sunshine as long as we can and the sunsets have been spectacular. The nights feel cooler and so we are trying to get as much done around here before the winds start blowing and the rains come.

Dave, Marv

Last Friday, it was such a beautiful day that we invited some friends of ours to join us on our boat to take in some crabbing. So after gathering up our gear, crab pots and chicken for bait, we headed out in Nehalem Bay to see what we could find. Marv and Patricia had never been crabbing before so we were hoping to catch a few crabs. Unfortunately, the only crabs we managed to trap were mostly females and small babies which we had to throw back. It must have been "girl's day out" and they sure liked our chicken bait! We ended up packing up our crab pots and heading home early as a huge marine fog bank was coming in on us fast. It was on us before we finished pulling the crab pots and so we had to follow the shore line most of the way home as we couldn't see much ahead of us. We did manage to make it back safely though. And, wouldn't you know it, it was beautiful in Wheeler - it didn't even look like we had been in thick weather. Anyway, instead of a delicious crab to eat, we settled on hamburgers!

Rails

Dave got the church wired and so he has plenty of light to see. He also put new railings up stairs as the walls are open up there and someone could easily fall. The old ones were sort of nailed up hit and miss and weren't much good. He threw out the old rotten ones and got the new ones in straight lines so they are much more effective. I helped him by cleaning out the area in the back of the church, as there was a bunch of old rotten wood lying around from the construction this past summer. He has spent a lot of time at the burn barrel this week, but the whole area is looking a lot better.

We took a drive up to Seaside on Monday to return the samples of Corian that I borrowed to see if any of them would look good on the kitchen countertop. The samples were too dark next to the kitchen cabinets, so I am still looking for something that will work. I did find a couple of lighter ones and I am waiting to get samples of those. Dave discovered that the Z-brick that is on the kitchen walls which we couldn't match has been hiding behind the refrigerator! We're not sure why the area behind the refrigerator was half covered with brick where no one could ever see them! So we are carefully removing them from there and storing them away so we can eventually put them on the wall behind the stove. It is a major job as they were cemented in. We are using a hammer and chisel to try to gently remove them without breaking them. We shall see.

The park and rec group had our work party in the park on Wednesday and we pulled more weeds from the beds so our maintenance man can put some chips down. We also potted up some daffodils for the post office this spring. I will keep the pots at my house but I have to cover them with a screen to keep those pesky squirrels from planting their seeds in the pots. I had a corn stock come up in one of them this summer thanks to the squirrels.

train

Dave lost a couple of days of productivity when the steam train showed up last weekend. He had to get some of our steam whistles out and get them plumbed so he can blow them using the air compressor. First he tried a small compressor but it didn't have enough air to make any noise with the whistle. So, he got a smaller whistle - same result. Then he dragged an old compressor of his dad's out and tried that. It sorta worked with the small whistle, so when the train came back on its return trip, he got a reaction from the passengers by tooting at them. He told me that it was too much work for a 15-second show and that he wouldn't be doing that again. Well, that didn't last long because when he heard the train again on Sunday, out came our whistles and air hoses - this time connected to a brand new compressor he just bought. This was a lot more successful as he had enough air to blow the big whistle off our steamboat. The passengers on the train loved it and even the engineer gave him a toot as they went by. Fun, but nothing else got done for two days while he was rigging up the whistles!

My sister Jeanne called to give me the latest news on her husband, Bob. He had a heart attack last week but they let him come home after a few days. He is resting and recuperating. He has been overwhelmed with get well wishes and prayers.

Well, that's the news down here at the coast.
