IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Dragon Boat

It's been interesting down here on the Nehalem River. The nice weather has brought out the kayaks, paddle boarders, die-hard fisherman and believe it or not, the local dragon boat crew out practicing. They are a bunch of enthusiastic gals who get together and paddle their dragon boat that is docked in Nehalem and they have even traveled to several competitions.

I spent a lovely Sunday sorting out trash left over from our Cubans who have been working on the church. They had put all the construction debris in black plastic bags and left them by the driveway. So I dived into the garbage bags and sorted out the burnable wood, the returnable plastic bottles, the actual garbage and - believe it or not - a big bunch of rocks! At least they cleaned up their mess! Anyway, most everything has now been sorted. We made another run to take our yard debris to the free dump afterward.

Speaking about the church, we have it about as complete as it is going to get for awhile. Dave wants to put electricity in it but otherwise, it's done!

Speaking of the church, we had quite a story that happened the other night and the church was at the center of it. I had just settled into bed when I heard this banging and crashing on the patio door. Dave was fast asleep and didn't hear a thing, so I got up and checked it out. Anyway, it turned out to be this young woman who appeared to be quite inebriated. She was inquiring whether she could get married in the church. I was trying to explain to her that - while the building was built as a church 70 years ago - it hasn't been a church for a long, long time and instead, it is just a storage space. She insisted that she HAD to get married there and wanted to see inside. She was crying and was begging me but there was no way I was going to get dressed and take her down there in the dark at 11 PM. After about ten minutes of this, I finally convinced her to come back on the weekend. She reluctantly agreed and left. We have a security camera mounted on that side of the house and on the video, we could see her stumble as she came up the steps and then stumble again on her way out, almost doing a face-plant into the birdbath before she caught her balance. I sure hope she made it home safe and sound. She probably doesn't remember a thing, as she didn't come back on the weekend. I went back to bed thinking, "Was that a dream (nightmare) that I just had?" The funny thing was, we have that security camera mounted by our back door to let us know of anyone coming to the door. The camera got this shot of her as she approached the door. But then she went right by it - completely missing the door and went to the patio door instead, so we didn't get a video of her talking to me. But the microphone did pick up what she was saying, so we do have her conversation recorded for future reference if she ever comes back.

I think I told you that my oven element had burned out just before the 4th of July and I have been without it for the month. Anyway, the repairman had ordered a new element and when he came back this week to replace it, he discovered that the oven is far worse than he first thought and is in fact - "toast". The thing has been dying one step at a time, so we weren't completely surprised. I guess 40 years is a long time to expect an oven to last. So, we have been on the internet, looking for a new wall oven. It has to be only 24" wide, it has to be white and PLEASE - it MUST be self-cleaning! We have limited space, so our options are also limited. As long as we're doing what is necessary to accommodate a new oven, we have also decided to have the microwave installed over the oven to clear up some room on my kitchen counter. Well, it turns out there is no such thing as a combination 24" wall oven and microwave, so we think we will buy them separately and modify the cabinet to have the microwave over the oven. I will lose some cabinet space, but will gain a bunch of counter space. Stay tuned for further developments.

I went to the physical therapist this week to see if I can build up some strength in my knee and ankle. The therapist wrapped my knee in some athletic tape to give it more support and gave me some exercises to do to help strengthen it. It feels better already and it is not so painful to climb up and down our stairs. I explained that I think it is taking too long for my ankle to heal and I have been told - not for the first time - to be more patient and allow the healing process more time.

The weather continues to be nice at the coast with temps in the low to mid 70's. I hope the people inland are not suffering too much with this hot weather - it has been near 100 there. Stay cool!!

Happy birthday to my sister-in-law, Leanna. Her birthday is Sunday.
