IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Temp

Was it hot enough for you over the weekend? It hit 100 degrees on Saturday night and I finally dragged the fan out so I could get cooled off. Dave took a picture when the temperature read 97 degrees but it did make it to 100 degrees for a short while. We are not used to it being so hot here on the coast and installing air conditioning for the few days when it does get hot doesn't make sense. So we just suffer through it. After all the rain we have had these past few months, we just have to be careful what we wish for!

We were supposed to go to a going-away party for my nephew and his wife on Saturday but it was so darn hot and driving back and forth from the coast to Tualatin and back the coast again just didn't happen. Dave's legs were bothering him so bad that he could hardly sit still, so that clinched it for us. I had made a big macaroni salad and baked a rhubarb/strawberry cobbler to take so we have been eating on that all week.

I have been busy cleaning up the steamboat for the annual Fourth of July parade in Manzanita. First I scrubbed the metal deck plates using a degreaser and they look so clean and almost good enough to eat off of. Dave's Mom would be so proud. Lillian always took a lot of pride in that deck being spotless. Then I washed the top and sides and inside of the boat and finished it off by polishing all of the brass. It took me most of the week to do it but now the boat is ready for the parade. The theme this year for the parade is "There is no place like home" and of course the first thing we thought of was the Wizard of Oz. We were coming up with decorating ideas for the boat that ran from flying monkeys and the wicked witch of the West to a yellow brick road and a tornado around the smoke stack! This is what happens when everyone gets their heads together! We will see what it looks like on the day of the parade.

road repair

We had a huge sinkhole develop on Highway 101 this week a little ways from our place. ODOT tried to fill it in with gravel but that just disappeared into the black hole. They had to close the highway on Wednesday so they could dig a trench across the road so they could put in a new culvert. This is the same place where a couple of years ago, the road caved in and they spent 6 weeks repairing that! The inconvenience of it all is that traffic has to go around a detour using Miami Foley Road to continue on Hwy. 101 at Garibaldi 15 miles south. ODOT is working day and night trying to repair it before the 4th of July weekenders arrive. One good thing is that we have NO traffic noise in front of our place right now. No loud log trucks or noisy motorcycles passing by, it is so nice to have it quiet.

Jan

We had a work party on Wednesday at Waterfront Park. We got most of the weeding done and got the city tractor to help put down some mulch. We still have to do some trimming on some of the bushes that have doubled in size from all the rain and also to clear out the Morning Glory that has taken over. It was a good work party and we got a lot done.

The family is coming down for the 4th of July and to celebrate birthdays. Both Greg and I have a birthday on July 2nd. We do this every year and I am sure Greg is tired of having to share his day with me. We all ride on the steamboat in the parade, blowing the whistle and waving to the crowds, then we come back for a BBQ and watch the fireworks later on. It is a fun time and I am hoping that the weather is tolerable.

I have been fighting the slugs in my garden. Those darn things have eaten my green beans and lettuce and I finally got mad and bought some slug bait. The carrots and beets are not doing well either but the weeds are thriving.

Dave's projects this week included getting the boat ready for the parade, getting the church kid-safe (the girls have decided they enjoy playing in the upstairs) and finishing his workbench. No pictures of the workbench, but I'll try to something next week.
