IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

I have been slowly getting back on Pacific Time after coming home from our trip. The first night we were both awake at 2:30 a.m. but managed to stay in bed until 6:30 a.m. because we were in West Linn at our daughter's place and we didn't want to disturb the family. We made it home on Thursday of last week and the next morning I was awake at 3:30 a.m. I stayed up for a while, did my ironing and paid my bills. But each day it has been a little later and now I am sleeping all night long.

We got together with our family on Labor Day to celebrate two birthdays. Our oldest granddaughter Ashtin turned 16 on August 29th. I can't believe that she is that old and that has her driver's license! Also, Dave had a birthday too; he turned 73, so now he can't tell everyone that I am a year older than him. My birthday is in July and so for a couple of months he says that I am a year older! We had a nice celebration for their birthdays and the funny thing about this was both Lara and Leslie gave Dave the same birthday card! What is also funny is that the girls had given Dave a pair of slippers for his birthday and since they were a little small, Lara agreed to exchange them. When we were back in Portland on Wednesday, she presented him with a new pair of slippers which were a size bigger. But the problem was, the slippers didn't match! One slipper was one size and the other was another size plus they were different styles. Someone had switched them in the box and the clerk didn't catch that when she checked them. So Lara had to make another trip to the store to get the right size and style that matched!

We stayed in Portland on Monday as Dave had a doctor's appointment with the oncologist to get started with the radiation treatment for his prostate cancer. He will start on the 21st of September and will continue five days a week day for 5 1/2 weeks. He will be able to have this done at OHSU's branch in Beaverton, so that will save us some driving time. The plan is to drive back and forth between the coast and Beaverton on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and then Thursday spend the night and get an early appointment on Friday so we can have a long weekend at home. That is a lot of driving back and forth, no matter what.

Dave has been having trouble with his right eye for the past few weeks and he wanted to have it checked out. His vision has been real cloudy and he hasn't been able to see much out of that eye. So on Wednesday, we made another trip into Portland - this time to see an ophthalmologist. He found out that he has scar tissue on his right eye - left over from his cataract surgery that he had several years ago. So he is planning to have a laser treatment to smooth things out on the 21st of September, just before his first radiation treatment. That will be a busy day!

It seems I am not done traveling. Our granddaughter Paige has been chosen to play in a soccer tournament in Boca Raton, Florida in November. She was one of two girls from Oregon to be invited to play for the Region IV Olympic Development Team. The Region IV team consists of girls from California, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Nevada, so it is a big honor. I plan to fly back there with Leslie and Paige for a week to cheer her on.

Since I have been home I have been busy working in my yard. The house sitter managed to keep all my house plants alive and healthy and my vegetable garden as well. But things really needed tidying up after I got home because we had a big wind storm the week before we got home, so I have been busy pruning my hedges and deadheading my flowers. There wasn't much left in the garden to eat, the deer managed to gobble up my green beans and tomatoes, but we still have fresh beets and carrots. Our feral cat, Jerry was waiting in the driveway when we arrived and he was glad to see me. He missed his evening brushing and scratches behind the ears.

Well, today is the big day! Dave and I are celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. The plan is to get together with our family and a few people from the original wedding party this weekend. We didn't want anything big for the occasion, but being with the family and friends is fine with us. We will go out to dinner tonight to celebrate on our own. I can hardly believe that it has been 50 years since I said my "I do" to the one I love. It is truly a blessing to be able to spend your entire life with someone that is as thoughtful and kind as my husband. I love him to the moon and back.
