IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

collage2

First of all, happy Independence Day!! This is being posted a day late because of family that was down for the holiday.

We started the week by meeting Lara at the Elderberry Inn to pick up the granddaughters for the week. That was close to half way between our homes and it's a good place to eat, so we made the exchange there. Their parents were coming down later that week to celebrate the 4th of July and birthdays.

We had a great time with the girls. On Monday, they got to go with me to my water aerobics class. They were so excited about coming with me that they were up and ready to go at 5:30 in the morning! So I made them go back to bed for a couple of hours and then they enjoyed swimming while I did my exercises.

We also took them to the beach one day. It was so windy though that we didn't stay long. The ocean water wasn't freezing cold as usual and I even enjoyed being chased by the waves. Dave and I don't get down to the beach too often (I don't know why - after all, we live here) so it was kind of nice to get away. Dave managed to make it down to the beach also, he had to trudge over a sand dune or two, but he made it. I brought a couple of chairs and so he watched from afar while we played along the shore. That's why the picture of the girls and me was taken so far away.

Wednesday was my birthday and I enjoyed being the "birthday girl" for the day. The gang at the pool in my water aerobics class sang to me and later on at my Wednesday work party, we had a little celebration to take time out from our labor. We were working up at the Upper Park this week to get it ready for families who like to come up to use the playground and have a picnic.

Dave took me up to Seven D's Nursery where I got three more heather plants for the front retaining wall (I was two short and one of the plants I had planted earlier had died) and ordered some Lithadora for the second tier. I took some time and got those planted. We had some wall blocks left over from when they did the second tier, so we convinced them to begin construction on the third wall instead of hauling them back to the store. They got that done on Tuesday, so we now have half the third and final part of this project done. We think we'll wait a little while before having them come back and finish.

The cats have been busy watching and digging at this rodent that has taken up residence by the fence. The cats will sit there for a long time if they see any movement in the dirt and then dig like crazy in the hole to try to get it. It is fun to watch but they sure are making a mess in the gravel that I just put there. They are pretty good about keeping the shrews and mice population down but I wish they could do something with the deer that venture into the yard and eat my strawberry plants and flowers!

Wednesday night Dave and I went to the Rising Star Cafe and had our usual "Vosburgers" and then watched a movie, "42". It was a true story about Jackie Robinson breaking the major league baseball color barrier in 1947. There was no one else watching the movie that evening at the restaurant, so we had a private screening!

Thursday it was getting the steamboat ready for the Manzanita Parade on the 4th of July. Dave hauled the boat out of the boat barn and the family washed and cleaned the boat up while Dave steamed it up. We also washed both cars. Later that afternoon, Leslie and her family came down to spent the night. That evening, Dave took the girls downtown to place American flags along the street for the holiday. They always look forward to that.

The next morning we got everything packed up and headed for the annual Manzanita parade with the boat on the trailer. We had 12 people in the boat for the parade this year and we all had a lot of fun tooting the whistle and waving to people along the parade route. Afterwards we came back home and ate hamburgers, hot dogs and apple pie. Tonight we will stay up and watch the fireworks which we can enjoy from our deck. I couldn't ask for anything better to end a perfect holiday with family and friends.
