IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

It was another busy week for me. I started out by helping get the Master Gardener's plant sale ready. I helped for three days late last week, but was unable to attend the actual sale on Saturday. My contribution mainly was arranging the vegetables in groups and especially the 100 or more tomato plants. Then we had to make sure the pots were clean and then pricing everything. All of our efforts were well worth it as we had over 900 people at the sale and our group made lots of money for scholarships. I guess the tomato plants were all gone in 45 minutes! We had a debriefing party on Wednesday and went over what we could do to improve on for next year.

Meanwhile, Dave and I left for the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Boat Parade. Our friends Kim and Harv Lillegard invited us to ride in their steamboat, the William Frederick (Bilfred for short). There were nine steamers in all that braved the stormy seas to ride in the parade through the Montlake Cut between Lake Union and Lake Washington. In fact, I think there were more steamboats that any other kind of boat represented, so it goes to prove that we just don't know when to come in out of the rain. It was so stormy that day and we all got soaked, even though we were dressed for the weather. At the end of the parade we all rafted up to the Pendragon which is a sailboat belonging to the president of the Northwest Steam Society. We were all welcomed aboard where we could take shelter and dry out a little. That's us in the boat with the parade number 18 - huddled in our rain gear before we went in to get out of the rain. On the way back to the launch ramp, we came across a fellow steamer who had broken down so we towed them back which made our 45 minute trip more like an hour and a quarter. I think we got dried out and warmed up by Tuesday!

Monday was a beautiful day so I decided to tackle the grass and weeds that were sprouting in our gravel driveway with a propane torch. I got the "upper" driveway done and some of the path but I still have the "lower" driveway to go. After I get done torching we will have a load of gravel delivered to spread out. Such fun! The weather held out for the early part of the week and it gave me a chance to plant all the annuals that I had purchased for my planters. I also got my lettuce, cucumbers and one tomato plant in the ground. It's time to buy more plants!

Speaking of buying more plants, the Nehalem Bay Garden Club will be having its plant sale this Saturday and I will be helping out with that one too. I will spend all day today sorting plants that the members will be donating to the sale and then I'll work all day at the sale tomorrow.

We spotted the elk out on the island in the front of our place the other day. This is the first time that they have ventured out there this spring and it was great to see them again. However, they didn't stay long. It's about time for the mama elk to be delivering their babies and they usually move away from the herd and find a safe place. We will see them with their young calves grazing on the island later this spring.

I made Dave his favorite "happy meal" for breakfast the other day. He loves eggs and so I fry some hash browns, poach a couple of eggs and microwave some bacon. He is in heaven because I don't let him have eggs every day so it is a special treat. This time I decided to make a "happy face" with the dish. His usual breakfast is cold or hot cereal which he barely tolerates because he would rather have his eggs.

We have a busy weekend ahead. Not only is it Mother's Day, but my youngest daughter, Leslie has a birthday on May 11th (I won't tell you how old she will be even though she's not very old), then my granddaughter Jaysa has a birthday on Monday, May 12th (she will be 9) and then Leslie's husband, Jason has a birthday on May 13th! So we have a lot of celebrating to do!

It looks like we may see the end of this rain soon. As of midnight last night, Astoria had 2.17 inches of rain in 24 hours. We went to Seaside to pick up my new glasses yesterday and it was raining so hard we just about floated away on the way home. I hope they're right about the end of the rain - we may get back into the high 70's here on the coast next week. I'm ready!
