IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

So, here is what's happening in my neck of the woods:

I was all packed and ready to go into Portland with Dave on Saturday to spend the night with my daughter Lara and family in West Linn but Dave was feeling so lousy with a cold that he decided to come back home that night after the broadcast. He didn't want to stay with Lara's family and infect all of them. So, I unpacked my bag and stayed home for the weekend. When he got home, Dave spent most of the weekend in bed with the cold. He finally got a prescription of Azithromycin and that seemed to help him. He has learned that if he can get on that stuff right away, he can shorten the time he's sick. Of course, he came down with it on Saturday and had to wait until Monday to talk to the doctor, so he had a two day delay in treatment. He is a lot better, but still is feeling tired and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I don't catch it.

Sunday afternoon I repacked my bag and headed into West Linn alone as Lara had asked me to accompany her for her surgery on Monday. I had asked my youngest granddaughter, Jordyn if she would like to go shopping and out for dinner to celebrate her 5th birthday (which is today). I always try to take each of my granddaughters out for their special day and so it was Jordyn's turn. I hardly got into the house when she came running up to me - so excited - "I'm ready to go Grandma!" I think she was looking forward to our one-on-one time together. We headed over to the Mall and I took her to Gymboree to select an outfit for her. She got a cute skirt and top and a new swim suit with matching flip-flops and sun glasses for this summer. Then we headed over to Red Robin for her usual "mac and cheese" and a sundae. She was so much fun and we really had a good time.

Lara and I got up at 0-dark-thirty on Monday to be at the hospital for her port replacement. It was an outpatient sort of operation and we were back home by noon. Her regular surgeon who had put the first port in wasn't available so we had Dr. Bauer who looked just like Superman! We couldn't see the big "S" on his chest but he sure could be Superman's double. The reason for the port replacement was that when Lara had her reconstruction surgery in December, the doctor had to remove the first port. Since she still has to have cancer treatments via an IV, she was tired of feeling like a pin cushion every time she had to go in for her treatments. Her veins are hard to find and the nurses at the hospital had to call in the "injection" team (alias vampires) who specialize in locating the right vein. So anyway, the surgery went fine and since I was there to drive her home they let her leave early. I stayed so I could pick up the granddaughters after school and then I headed back down to the coast.

The Veterans Administration called this week and said Dave's new hearing aids were ready. There was no way he could combine the appointment at the VA Hospital with another event, so Thursday, he made a special trip to Portland to get them. Since he had the first appointment of the day at 8 a.m., he was up and on his way into town well before dawn - not really the best time of day for him, if you know what I mean. When he checked in at the clinic, the first thing they told him was that they couldn't find an appointment for him! You can imagine his response to that news! When they finally looked a little harder, they found that they had accidentally "double-booked" that time slot and told him they'd get to him soon. Well, "soon" turned into two more hours in the waiting room before he made enough of a pest of himself to finally be seen. I guess everything after that went okay though, because he's very happy with the new devices. Not only do they have all the new technology, they also have "Bluetooth" which means he can talk on his phone using his hearing aids! He called me and tried it out as soon as he left the hospital and they sound just fine. I'm glad he qualified for the new ones and I'm also glad that we didn't have to cough up the $7000!

I'm hoping for some sunshine, but I'm also hoping the groundhog doesn't see his shadow tomorrow. If he doesn't, that means an early Spring, right? We are counting the days before our road trip to Arizona. We will leave on Sunday morning because we will be celebrating Jordyn's birthday on Saturday and Dave has a Blazer broadcast that night. It has been raining in Phoenix but my sister who lives there has said that it should be dry with the temperatures back up in the high 70's by the time we arrive. I'll take that any day and I can hardly wait!! I'll let you know all about it next week!
