IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

I spent the weekend by myself as Dave had to work a football telecast in Hillsboro. Since he had to be at the stadium at the crack of dawn Saturday and spend all day and half the night working, he decided that he would get a hotel and spend a couple of nights in town. While he was away, we had a terrific wind and rain storm and I spent a restless night listening to the noises of branches hitting the roof and rain beating on the windows. Luckily, we didn't lose any power. Dave didn't have such a great time where he was either because the storm was pretty intense and he was exposed to the elements. He was glad he had brought his rain gear and long johns with him. He finally got back home Sunday afternoon - really tired - and immediately collapsed in the recliner and took a two-hour nap. His time at home didn't last very long as he left again on Monday to take a neighbor to the Portland Airport. While he was in town, he took the new computer he bought for his sister to a friend to have it set up. Leanna now has a fast computer, flat screen monitor and a new printer. Oh yeah, she also is now hooked up to a modem. She had been on dial-up and is amazed at how fast the new machine is! Anyway, after pretty much being gone from Friday through Tuesday, he's home for a few days and trying to tackle some of the chores on his "to-do" list.

The Master Gardeners had their annual awards banquet on Wednesday and this year it was held at the Tillamook Elks Club. The club was all decorated for the holidays and that made it easy because we didn't have to do any of the decorating. There were about 100 members present and we had a delicious meal of prime rib. I received my recertification award for the required hours I had completed. We didn't get to eat until 7:00 p.m. and I was starving, so I ate more than I should have and really suffered later. I was still full when I went to bed and didn't get a very good night sleep.

We managed to have one good dry day this week and so I went outside and sprayed Round-Up on the weeds that are beginning to germinate and sprout. It has been the ideal climate for the weeds to take off as the temperature has been mild and damp. I figured I could get a jump start on those pesky weeds and maybe save myself some work later on.

Our two tom cats are still hanging around. They are both neutered so that has been taken care of. They are about 6 months old and it is fun to watch them play in the yard, chasing their tails and pouncing on one another. They won't let us get close to them so we have to keep our distance. They sit outside the patio door at night and watch us through the window like a couple of "peeping toms". Their mother showed up this week and tried to eat their food but I chased her away. I think she is living down in the church and I would really like to trap her and get her neutered so she doesn't bring any more of her kittens to my doorstep.

We have been having quite a go-around with this company that has been mailing us our vitamins recently. We have been taking these vitamins for the past 10 years and lately they have been screwing up our order. First, the address was wrong and it took three months to get that straightened out. Then they charged $500 on our credit card for vitamins which we did not order and wasn't what we normally pay and they were for somebody else. I had called to get this straightened out and to cancel our order (we had had it). Well, we got refunded the $500 but not for our cancelled order so I had to call them again. They told us that they had sent it to someone else who lives in Brookings, Oregon - 300 miles from us - and for us to call them up and have them send the order to us! What?? We were not about to contact these people and besides, it was not our job. Just refund our money. Well, with "authorization" they are going to refund our money and take care of retrieving their product from whomever it was sent to in Brookings. We have yet to see the refund. I guess I will have to give them another call.

We did get some long-awaited good news from the Veterans Administration this week. Last year, Dave filed for a hearing-loss disability based on damage received during his time on active duty in the Navy. They finally tested him in September and Tuesday he received word that he qualified for the disability. The big thing is that he now will be able to get medical care at the VA hospital and will also get new hearing aids! Hooray for that! We're still trying to negotiate all of the paperwork, but we should now be able to drop his health and prescription insurance, which will save us a couple of dollars.

Christmas is a little over two weeks away and I am beginning to feel anxious, because I feel I haven't got anything done. My Christmas letter is written - but not printed out (I am waiting to get some pictures together to enclose with that); I am not getting out the decorations this year because we won't be around (we will be in at Lara's during the holidays) and I am not getting any of my shopping done (I am having trouble trying to decide what to get people). I feel like I am at a standstill. I did manage to make a couple of batches of Christmas cookies but even that was a major task as I ran out of the special candied cherries I needed and ended up having to go to several stores to find more. I just need to take a deep breath...

Next week, I hope to have more accomplished as I will be away at Lara's starting on Thursday. She is scheduled for her second mastectomy and reconstruction surgery next Friday and will be in the hospital for a week, so I will be helping with her girls and whatever else needs to be done. I am taking my Christmas decorations into West Linn and will set up a small tree where we stay at her place. The granddaughters can help me decorate it. I am planning on being at Lara's until after she gets out of the hospital and is on the mend before I come back home.
