IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

The last of our recent guests left on Monday morning, so I have been busy cleaning the house and have called in the carpet cleaner for the yearly cleaning of the carpets. We had a really nice visit with Bobbie Recio, who spent a few days with us. She lives in Willits, California (just about 500 miles south on Highway 101). She used to live up here and owned a local restaurant here in Wheeler. She made the rounds visiting her family as well as with everyone she knows in Wheeler. Her sister and brother-in-law were staying near here and fishing here on the river. They live in Eastern Washington, and we're about halfway between there and Willits so that was another reason Bobbie wanted to visit. She wanted to see the old restaurant so she took everyone out for dinner at the Sea Shack and we wined and dined all weekend.

I am attending a class on dieting called "Smart Choices", which I think I mentioned last week. It was hard to eat all the right foods with company around, but I did manage to write everything down and we will see what the instructor has to say about my intake. The class is really refreshing my memory and is very informative. I am learning about all the food groups and how much there is suppose to be in a serving. We set goals for ourselves about exercising and eating the right foods. So far, what I am eating seems to satisfy me and I have lost a couple of pounds. There is another person in my class who lives in Manzanita. We have agreed to carpool since we have to drive all the way to Seaside each week. I'm also working out on the Wii Fit every day. We bought the thing to get some exercise over the winter, but it works just great for the workout I'm supposed to be doing along with the diet. I do a variety of programs on it for a half hour each day.

Jan’s Zucchini I have to tell you about the zucchini that was given to me. The thing was huge! There was much debate as to what I was going to do with it because Dave doesn't care for zucchini and I certainly couldn't consume the whole thing, I decided to shred it and put it into 3-cup containers and freeze it. I got 9 cups alI together so I will have enough to make zucchini bread or cake or something to disguise it so I can sneak it by Dave and then maybe I won't be eating it all by myself!

Dave and I got our flu shots on Monday. As I was standing in line, I noticed that a pneumonia shot was available and so I asked to have that one too. So both arms got it. I had bronchitis last June and I felt I might be prone to getting pneumonia. I made Dave get one too. Anyway, the flu shot didn't bother me but I sure had a sore arm from the pneumonia shot.

We had this Tsunami advisory on Tuesday along the whole California and Oregon coast after the big earthquake in Samoa. We had to laugh as the news station sent a reporter down to the coast and he was out in the dark, by the ocean reporting on any wave that might be dangerous. Well, the big wave turned out to be an eight-inch ripple! It was so over-rated but it gave us a chance to dig out the NOAA radio and find out that it doesn't work! We think it got dropped or something so it looks like we will have to buy another one. The Red Cross even called me (I am a volunteer) to let me know that it wasn't probable that we would have to run for higher ground.

While all that was going on, Dave was involved with the Red Cross as well. He and some other ham radio operators set up an emergency transmission station at the Red Cross Emergency Trailer in Bayside Gardens and ran a communications test with an emergency coordinator. They were pretty excited about it because the antenna they erected not only allowed them to run their test, but they were able to talk with people clear over the coast range in Hillsboro and Beaverton. I don't know if we're ever going to have to actually use all this emergency training we're getting, but if we do, we'll be ready!

I had to run into town on Wednesday for a haircut and so I got a few other errands done while I was there. I left the house about 11:00 a.m. and I didn't get back home until 5:30 p.m. I was really tired by the time I made it back driving the whole distance to and from by myself. That is the problem when you don't go to town very often and you run up a "things to get" list.

Girls with kittens Jaysa with kittens Last year, Lara and Greg's family cat Sammy died and they had promised the girls new kittens. The day had finally come and they sent us a picture of Jadyn and Jaysa each holding a new kitten. After much debate, the kittens are called "Sarah" and "Sami". That was a lot better than the first names they had chosen, "Unicorn" and "Rainbow". Jaysa is especially fond of the kittens and spends most of her waking (and sleeping) moments with them. Her mom took this picture of her cuddled in the corner holding both kittens, fast asleep.

Next week, our lives revert to winter mode. The first Blazer pre-season game is next Tuesday and for the next seven or eight months, our schedule will revolve around the Trail Blazer schedule. Dave will go to town on Monday just to get all the cobwebs out of the broadcast gear and won't be back down here until Wednesday. I'll stay here because of my Monday night class and a Garden Club field trip on Tuesday.

We have had a lot of rain this week and the leaves are starting to turn. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year with all the colors. So happy fall, everyone.
