IT'S FRIDAY, MY FAVORITE DAY!!

Ashtin Paige We had a great weekend watching my two oldest granddaughters play soccer. We left Saturday morning for Salem where their games were and it only took us a couple of hours to get there. It had been raining earlier, and we thought maybe we were going to get wet, but it turned out to be dry. As it turned out, they were playing at the same time on different fields (but only a couple hundred feet from each other) so in order to be fair, we watched one half of one game with one and then switched to watch the other half with the other. That is how it happens and I can remember when our girls played softball, it would never fail that they had games at the same time and we would be doing the same switcharoo in the middle of the game. Anyway, it was a perfect day to watch them play and see how much they had improved from last year. We watched Paige's game first. She is really good and so much fun to watch. She's bigger and far more skilled than the other girls on the field and so she was able to do whatever she wanted. She scored a couple of goals and her passing and blocking skills have really improved.

At halftime, we moved to Ashtin's field. She was playing goalie when we picked up her game in the second half. She did well too and after playing goalie for a quarter, she got a chance to move up and play forward. She is very skilled too and not many of the other girls on the field could do the things she does. She almost scored at one point as she was standing in front of the goal and the ball bounced right in front of her. It really caught her by surprise and by the time she reacted, she had kicked the ball out of bounds. She was so mad at herself. It's comical to watch Leslie and Jason on the sidelines. We can see ourselves a generation ago! Soccer parents - gotta love 'em!

Lara’s Cake We all left the soccer field at the same time. The girls decided to ride with Grandma and Grandad as we headed for West Linn. We all gathered at Lara's place to celebrate her birthday. We sang "Happy Birthday" and ate cake. Her birthday was actually Monday, the 20th, but it was just easier to get together on Saturday. We spent the night and were planning on babysitting as Greg had made arrangements to take Lara out for a spa treatment and dinner, but the kids ended up at their babysitter so we left for home on Sunday.

Sign’ Dave is running for Wheeler City Council and so far has run a very low-key campaign. He made up a few business cards to pass out but then we decided that a couple of lawn signs wouldn't hurt. He had looked into buying some ready-made signs but they wanted $10 a piece for them and he didn't want to spend the money. So we made our own. He cut some plywood and I painted them off-white. He got some letter stencils and we made a pattern and while I held the sign, he sprayed the letters blue and red. He also had to cut out the cardboard letters and by the time he finished with that, the $10 a sign looked pretty good! Anyway, we ended up with two lawn signs - one for each end of the property along Highway 101 so you can see them coming and going. They turned out pretty good if I do say so myself!

Jordyn & Grandad Let me back up for a minute to last weekend. As I said, we did get to spend the night at Lara's and it was a lot of fun to be able to reconnect with the kids. We haven't had a lot of time to see them this summer and it's amazing how much they've grown. Last spring, Jordyn wouldn't let Grandad hold her for even a second without pitching a fit! Something happened over the summer, because as you can see, the two of them are best buddies now!

Jaysa And Miss Jaysa is getting more and more personality with every passing day. She must be 3 going on 13! We didn't get any good pics of Jadyn this time, but will make up for that next time.

We had our weekly work party for the Waterfront Park and managed to get more weeds pulled. We also found out that someone had stolen a bunch of the cement blocks that we had used for decoration along the pathway. I don't know what we are going to do. It is so discouraging to see that sort of thing happening in this little town. Last year a bunch of plants were stolen. Anyway, we got the place pretty well weeded and fertilized so we should be set for the winter. I wish my own yard were ready for the winter too. I still have some tulip bulbs that I need to get planted. I sure hope the weather continues to be nice so I can get some last minute yard work done.

The Riverbend Players' first performance "A Bad Year For Tomatoes" will open tonight with a gala fundraiser for NCRD. They are having hors d'oeuvres and champagne before the play and desserts and coffee at intermission. I have been busy making fancy cookies for the dessert and crab quiches for hors d'oeuvres. The performances are this weekend and next and I hope they have a huge turnout for they have been rehearsing for weeks and weeks.
