Steam Launch CAPTAIN BELL At the steam meet in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1991, the boats were docked in a beautiful setting. Directly in front of the Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel, they were easily accessed by thousands of curious visitors to the downtown area. One distinguished-looking gentleman came up to us and after looking the boat over very carefully, asked, "Do you happen to know if this boat was built from plans published in "Sports Afield?" When we told him that it was, he announced, "I designed this boat!" He was David Beach, the Naval Architect who was persuaded to submit plans for a steam launch for the "Sports Afield 1962 Boatbuilding Annual". Mr. & Mrs. David Beach It was the first time he had seen his creation. Needless to say, he was very excited and spent the rest of that day and all of the next as our guest on board. It was fun to watch him as he rode in the boat...looking over the side to see how she cut through the water...walking from side to side to test her seaworthiness...and just generally satisfying his knowledge that he had indeed designed a fine little boat. An interesting side note to the story: Beach and his wife were in the midst of a trans-Canada holiday and had been visiting Vancouver. A scheduled tour there was canceled, so they decided to take a side trip to Victoria. While there, they heard the symphony of steam whistles that accompany every gathering of the boats. His maritime curiosity roused, he decided to check out the source of the sounds, found the boats, saw the one he thought looked very familiar...and you know the rest of the story.
If it hadn't been for that canceled tour, he never would have seen his boat.
